A Conversation with Walt Whitman

Hello dear friends!

My name is Pilar Gonzalez and I am an actress, writer, and director from Queens, New York who, like any artist who has ever and will ever live, wants to change the world. I recently graduated from the City College of New York with a Bachelor's Degree in Theatre and Creative Writing, and I need as much help as I can get in order to catapult me into my first major project that will express the overwhelming passion of my generation in a world where necessity often overshadows desire

I am raising money to produce a performance art piece that I created entitled, "I Celebrate Myself: A Conversation with Walt Whitman" about the tedium that many people have to endure during their work day all the while internally living in a parallel universe of creativity in which they would rather live. However, they cannot simply abandon their blue-collar lives because it is what funds their lives as creators.

The piece will be structured as a conversation (hence the title) between the voice of my generation and 19th century poet Walt Whitman, whose poetry centers around "the self, the body, and the multitude of America" (PBS.org). These themes complement my piece's objective because our constant lives of routine cause us to lose those things in ourselves as well as in the people we encounter daily. We forget that seeing ourselves in those we encounter during the day will help us do our jobs and eventually get us closer to the colorful and exciting lives we would rather be living.

Successfully producing this show would mean so much to me because I know that there are so many people, including myself, that are living this reality right now. It will be an opportunity to be heard amidst the noise of society and for others who are not familiar with this kind of tragedy to understand us a bit better. Understanding is a crucial step in increasing the love we have for one another, and I would like my piece to facilitate that even if it's only a little bit

Rehearsals for my piece will begin on January 11th until January 29th and the show is scheduled to begin on February 3rd until February 5th. The first round of auditions happened on November 6th and the second on December 6th. The cast is composed of 9 actors.

The money raised will be used to cover the expenses of the production (Rent for the theatre, set pieces, costume pieces, props) as well as payment for the production team listed below:

Director: Pilar Gonzalez
Stage Manager: Kayla Lessard
Costume Design: Katherine Peña
Light/Sound Design: Natalie Marmol
Choreography: Nelson Patino, Jr.

Thank you so much for reading! I hope you are able to support my project!
