Help the WFCC Fight for Freedom!

When the World Famous Cannabis Cafe originally opened back in 2009, the Associated Press billed it as the first cafe opened specifically for state registered medical marijuana patients in the United States.

As Director Emeritus for Oregon NORML (the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws), and cofounder of the NORML Women's Alliance, owner Madeline Martinez has been on the front lines of the fight to legalize cannabis and the fight for fair laws for cannabis patients and consumers for years.

In opening the Cafe, Martinez sought to create a place where responsible adults could gather socially and consume cannabis "out of public view", as required by state laws. For the better part of the last decade, the WFCC has been a safe, comfortable "home away from home" for medical cannabis patients seeking to enjoy their freedom without exposing the community at large to their smoke and vapor.

Now, the Cafe is being threatened by overzealous legislation seeking to protect citizens from accidental exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke. The Oregon Indoor Clean Air Act (HB2546) includes cannabis, but contains no exemptions for private cannabis clubs. It also fails to provide an alternative place to legally consume cannabis, which has been legalized for all adults over the age of 21 in the state.

The inclusion of cannabis in the ICAA threatens to close down cannabis clubs, and leaves many people without the ability to access their legal rights. "Public view" can be anything from city parks to front yards and private balconies, and many can't smoke at home due to leasing conditions or others in the house.

The WFCC is a necessary part of the community. As such, Madeline Martinez is standing her ground. She is keeping the doors to the World Famous Cannabis Cafe open.

Here is how you can help!

We face civil fines in the amount of $4,000 per month to stay open while we fight for an exemption or amendment that will allow us to continue to provide this necessary space. Any amount that you can donate to help with legal costs is helpful and appreciated.

If you're in Oregon and over 21, come visit us and see what's going on for yourself! The best way to support us is to join us! We've got music, medicine and munchies! All that's missing is you!
