Hello Folks,
I am Mark Utter; a self-proclaimed inspirational speaker who types to communicate. I’m pleased to let you know that I presented at an annual conference Syracuse University’s Institute for Communication and Inclusion (ICI) is organizing in Columbia, Maryland at the end of July. It was a 3-day conference with two travel days.
With this GoFundMe campaign I was able to cover many of my costs including a team of two people who supported my communication and pluged my devices into things that put my typed words up on the big screens.
I am also really pleased to let you know that I have started my business, Utter Communication Strategies. I showcased in my workshop; Reaching Up through the Keyboard to a Brighter Life.
Here’s a taste of my life for those of you who haven’t been following my story or are new to it:
I’m 51 years old and I live in Colchester, Vermont. Champlain Community Services (CCS) provides assistance for my day to day ventures negotiating a world that functions differently than I do. For the first thirty years of my life I did not have access to the world of words, except as a listener. An observer. When I was thirty, I was introduced to Supported Typing, and started my life as a writer of words. I wrote, directed and starred in a film called “I am in here; a view of my daily life with good suggestions for improvement from my intelligent mind.” Currently I write a blog called “Utterly Mark” and have a talk show, “The Uttering Mind”, on CCTV (Channel 17 in Burlington).
I moved my services to CCS seven months ago because of their supported self-employment program. My new business is an offshoot from the great knowledge and experience I gained making a movie about my life.
With Utter Communication Strategies I will share what I have learned from having an obviously difficult time with verbal communication. I also want to use my difficulties to shine a light on all the difficulties we as a thinking and feeling species experience with communication.
I am in an exciting new chapter in my life and very eager to succeed yet there are some very big hurdles ahead.
The really great thing about the ICI Summer Institute is that at it I was surrounded by others who are like me and we totally inspired and supported each other. This was my third time attending and presenting at the Summer Institute. This year’s location for it, Columbia, MD, is the furthest away I’ve ever gone physically in my otherwise extraordinary life.
The money raised supported that trip. The money that continues to flow in is going towards "start-up costs" for Utter Communication Strategies.
