Unsung Hero - Umberto "Suru" Ripai, Food & Service Worker at Leo O'Donovan Dining Hall

"I was born in Southern Sudan. I left my country in 1965 and spent 21 years of my life living in west Africa - especially in Liberia. Life here [in America] is nice… I really miss my home. I haven’t been back to Southern Sudan in a long time - almost 45 years..

I have been here at Georgetown for over 20 years now. One of my favorite memories here at Georgetown was attending the Abissa show on campus.. They have a showcase every year that really reminds me of my home country. When I went to the show, the students were so happy to see me! It brings tears to my eyes when I watch the students dance and celebrate our culture.. just to share my identity and reconnect with some of the students and get in touch with my culture again ..makes me see that this is my home now.."

Help us fund Suru's trip back home to visit his family.

The money donated will be used to pay for a round trip back for Suru to South Sudan.

Thank you for any contribution you can make to our goal

Note: Funds excess of our goal will be given to Suru to help him fund additional trips back to Sudan and 10% of the contributions over $2500 will go to the Unsung Heroes Organization fund- which will be used for future projects and for costs associated with marketing and sharing the stories of workers like Suru.

Hello everyone,

I hope you all enjoyed Thanksgiving with family and loved ones. Just wanted to give you guys an update regarding Suru’s trip.

We have spent the past few months preparing for Suru’s trip to South Sudan by getting all of the immunizations & vaccinations and travel documents taken care of. However, we have been getting many questions and concerns regarding his trip to South Sudan. It’s still very hostile and numerous sources recommend avoiding All travel to the Republic of South Sudan, due to armed conflicts, inter-ethnic violence and high levels of violent crime.

For safety purposes, Suru and the Unsung Heroes team have decided to avoid any travel to South Sudan during this holiday season.

Instead, Suru will be traveling to Alberta, Canada to spend this holiday season with his daughter Rose and his 3 grandchildren! Below is a breakdown of how we allocated the funds:

$6031 TOTAL RAISED, withdrawn and administrated by Unsung Heroes:

EXPENSES:
$603.10 == Gofundme’s mandatory fees
$640.00 == Vaccinations to South Sudan (Good for at least 2 years)
$686.20 == Round trip flight from DC to Alberta, Canada
$4101.70 == Remaining funds

Suru will be leaving D.C. on December 15th, and will be spending 2 weeks with his family with a scheduled return flight on December 29th. Similar to our gofundme campaign for Frankie, the remaining funds will be given Suru as a gift for his 20+ years of dedication and service to our Georgetown community.

Suru is very very excited to see his family in Canada! Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible for him. Follow us on Facebook for more updates! Facebook.com/UnsungHeroes.org

Warm regards,
