UPR SOP Hurricane Relief Fund

$35,118 of $75,000 goal

The University of Puerto Rico School of Pharmacy Doctor of Pharmacy Program is ACPE accredited, and located on the Medical Sciences Campus in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Following the devastating effects of Hurricane Maria, the first Category 5 storm to make direct landfall across the island in decades, many practice sites for our students in their final year of the program may be compromised. Currently, the University is also closed while striving to establish a timeline for resuming academic activities promptly, after water supply and electric services have been restored. However, clinical practice sites may be delayed much longer from being able to open as there are significant damages island-wide.

The School of Pharmacy has already received many offers from other ACPE accredited colleges and schools to receive some of our 4th year students for advanced professional practice experiences (APPEs). This is a very generous offer as APPE sites are often difficult to find for one's own students, let alone those from other institutions. However, even with these spots available, the financial costs associated with flying to the mainland US from Puerto Rico as well as the lodging needed for a 4-6 week rotation may put these sites out of reach for our students. This is especially difficult for many of our students now as they are confronting the additional financial hardships of loss of homes and family businesses due to the destruction caused by Hurricane Maria.

We are launching this GoFundMe campaign to raise money for our students who are hoping to travel to the US for an APPE now that their practice sites may be unavailable here in Puerto Rico. All of the funds raised will go directly to providing travel and lodging costs for our 4th year pharmacy students.  Any funds raised in excess of the campaign goal will go directly to UPR pharmacy students who are in need of financial assistance to help rebuild their lives here in Puerto Rico.

Our most heartfelt gratitude goes out to those of you who support our graduating students to complete their education, in order to make a difference in our communities.

Dear supporters,

Thank you all so much for your generosity! It has been 3 months since Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, and as we have begun to adjust to the new normal here, we wanted to send you all an update on how things are going.

The week following the storm, we met with our 4th year students to start making contingency plans for their experiential rotations. As many of our sites were unable to host students immediately following the storm, we had to look beyond Puerto Rico to our colleagues on the mainland US. The response from other schools of pharmacy and US institutions has been incredible and we received more offers to take our students than we had students who needed spots. As you can imagine, healthcare services are much needed and therefore, many of our practice sites are up and running. However, taking advantage of these opportunities would not have been possible for many of our students without the incredible response from all of you who supported this campaign. Thanks to you all, we have been able to financially support 20 students who have traveled and will travel to the US for multiple experiential rotations. Checks have been issued and some have already been received by the students (and we anticipate that the rest will be able to be picked up by the remaining students in the coming weeks).

Again, we can't thank you all enough for your help during this difficult time. Your generosity has been truly heart-warming, and has made a real difference in the lives of our students.

Happy holidays to you all!

Thank you so much for your generosity towards our students! In just a few days, we have already received over 140 individual donations. Your support is incredible and will mean so much to our students. In addition, we have received many additional offers from other schools of pharmacy, hospitals, pharmacies, and individual pharmacists willing to take our students for APPEs. This response has been incredible.

GoFundMe has asked me to also post a specific clarification of how the funds will be dispersed to our students. To expedite the availability of the funds to our students, the Dean of our School of Pharmacy, Dr. Wanda Maldonado, will be withdrawing the funds in my name and then distributing them directly to our 4th year pharmacy students for travel and lodging costs. Several of our students have already begun purchasing airfare while others will do so as soon as the funds are distributed. Receipts for all of the fund disbursements will be issued and once the campaign is over we will be sure to update you all with how many students we have been able to help thanks to your support.

Again, from the bottom of our hearts, thanks so much for your generosity!!!
