Daring tree activists photo book
Time is running out to save the world's forests. We must stop cutting down trees, and plant more of them in order to slow human-caused climate change.
Your donation funds a TreeSpirit Project photo book for TreeSpirit’s mission: to protect, promote and revere trees and forests, using activism, art & advocacy.
This big 11x14" coffee table book compiles over 120 TreeSpirit photographs made over 12 years — with over 1,000 tree lovers and fellow environmental activists.
Many of these men and women, young and old, from all walks of life, braved being naked in public for the first time to save trees, and for the thrill of participating.

DONATE to help Jack create this one-of-kind book.
THE BOOK'S PURPOSE: to touch people's hearts, inspire their imagination, and stir their senses with a lush, image-driven celebration of the inspiring beauty of trees and forests. And people who understand how integral they are to our lives. We need trees now more than ever.
Science, reason and rational argument all confirm we must end deforestation and plant more trees. For this to be widespread, people must also care for trees emotionally; appreciate all that they do for us; feel a connection to them. What we love we will protect.
DONATE TO PROTECT TREES!
THE BOOK'S TEXT will include stories from behind the scenes of these activist photos, more about TreeSpirit's mission and genesis, and Testimonials from the many participants who had incredible, unexpected experiences while making them.
100% PCW* RECYCLED PAPER will be used in the book. No trees will be used to make this visual ode to the beauty and critical role of trees in our lives.
WHY SELF-PUBLISH? Jack was approached by a publisher who wanted to make a TreeSpirit book, but unwilling to discuss recycled paper as an essential, mission-driven component. This is why this self-publishing funding campaign began.

A. YES. After funding, we will thank ALL donors who made this project possible by email, we will ask if anyone would prefer NOT have their name printed in the book.
TreeSpirit only exists and grows with your participation and support! Thank you!

A long overdue update on the TreeSpirit Book you are helping create:
I’ve been quiet about the campaign the past two months because I’ve been unusually busy, including working on the book’s content. And, to be transparent, dealing with big, energy-consuming transitions in my life this summer. My decade-long relationship has ended and I’ve moved my home and office from a lovely nest in the woods of west Marin County, CA (to a new home in a different Marin woods). I've settled in, led a Giant Sequoias trip, also made new TreeSpirit photographs at two festivals, and more. Now I’m again able turn fuller attention to producing this book.
What’s been going on: a producer, graphic designer, and I have reached out to numerous printers in the U.S., Canada, and China. We’ve done extensive research on paper options and several high-quality book makers. We needed to find those with experience printing photographs on 100% recycled paper, an uncommon specialty. Through this process we’ve confirmed how rare environmentally responsible PHOTOGRAPHIC books are. It’s much easier — and far less expensive — to keep doing business as usual: felling trees around the world to make paper.
We’re more than halfway through our funding campaign, having raised over $23K — but only halfway to our needed funding goal. Much to our dismay, and everyone’s surprise, making a 100% tree-free book is 2-3 times more expensive. But the more of us who do it, the more it becomes a viable option, and eventually less expensive to not kill trees to make paper. (It already is less expensive to society IF you factor in the huge environmental cost of deforestation, which the industry and our society does not yet!)
The challenge now is staying on schedule to print in time for the holidays, our original intention. The book will of course be printed regardless, but for those impatient people out there — like me — sooner is better! Not just because of YOUR investment, but because the time for book’s advocating for more forests and tree appreciation is NOW, when we must face our self-created existential environmental (climate) crisis. And change course, NOW.
Please ask your friends and fellow forest lovers if they would donate a copy of the book. Or donate to get a big TreeSpirit print for display, which greatly accelerates the funding total. If each supporter referred one additional person, this campaign would reach its goal!
Thank you for your support and for believing in my TreeSpirit Project and this coffee table book's potential to inspire and be a catalyst for change. We need more reverence and wiser, more heartfelt action on behalf of trees, forests, and the natural world — for our survival.
As I write this, I see and smell smoke from an unprecedented number of wildfires now raging in California, in part due to the ongoing drought and heat waves from human-caused global warming. And global warming is in large part due to deforestation. The time to draw attention to these life-threatening issues is, again I say it, NOW. Especially with an administration in the White House that denies these facts, and the overwhelming, global scientific community consensus.
This is beyond politics; this is life and death on an unprecedented scale: drought, hurricanes, wildfires, and the millions of human (and animal) lives affected by these and future human-exacerbated calamities. We CAN successfully face this challenge, we just have to care more and act, with wisdom, from our hearts.
We'll reach our goal quickly at this brisk pace. Please post, share tell friends about the #TreeSpiritBook with the new URL: http://www.TreeSpiritBook.com
