Derin and Demet’s Story, by Demet
Our story began in Turkey, when doctors told me my three-year-old girl, Derin, would not survive extreme seizures and fevers as high as 104F, which were brought on by Angelman Syndrome (AS). In spite of this grim message, I believed my baby still had a chance. After selling my apartment and packing our suitcases filled with new hopes, I brought her to the US to receive treatment at Mass General Hospital (MGH).
Once at MGH, Derin spent two months in ICU and had several procedures. Thereafter, she finally opened her eyes to a new chapter. It was not always easy to figure things out and to be by myself with my baby girl in a new place. For two years, we tried very hard to keep going thanks to the opportunities given and to support of some very caring people. Due to her AS, Derin needs around the clock care, and her compromised immune system results her to have frequent hospitalizations. Needless to say, this situation renders me unable to hold a regular employment. The community in Greater Boston has been so helpful and accommodating; the fundraising back in 2018 winter and Mother's day event raised $ 29,250 . This amount has been used for housing and uncovered medical expenses ; me and my daughter are so fortunate and thankful for getting continued support to live in a suitable apartment and receive help for medical necessities.
This fundraising is for our desperately needed mobility, Wheel Chair Car and continued uncovered medical expenses. Derin has to use a special wheelchair all the time, which is extremely heavy and bulky resulting in huge difficulties to arrange a suitable transportation. We also need funding for the uncovered medical expenses e.g Oxygen, her custom made specialized clothes, shoes, push chair and daily essentials. We kindly ask your support to continue to help us keeping up the hope for Derin .
