Dozers Medical Costs

Tax deductible
Dozer, a 7-month old, bull terrier puppy, ate an entire rope tug toy a few days before Christmas. Unfortunately this caused extensive and severe damage to his intestines. As the toy made its way through him, it somehow became knotted or stuck and the strings tore open his intestines in multiple spots. The Buddy Foundation agreed to pay all the medical costs to save him and to keep him from being euthanized. They've added up to many thousands and thousands of dollars so far. This has included a local vet that did the first surgery and then a veterinary specialty center that did the last three surgeries. His prognosis for survival was listed as poor so he is definitely our "Christmas Miracle." Please help us offset the costs of saving this wonderful puppy, all donations are greatly appreciated.

Below is a detailed write up of the care he received from the veterinary specialty center -

Dozer presented to Veterinary Specialty Center on 12/23 for evaluation of vomiting, anorexia, and lethargy. He had surgery a few days prior at a different veterinary hospital to remove a linear foreign body. Soon after presentation to VSC, we discovered that his previous surgical sites had broken down, so he was therefore spilling intestinal contents directly into his abdominal cavity. He was taken to surgery on emergency basis. A large portion of his intestines had to be surgically removed in order to remove the unhealthy tissue. A feeding tube was also placed into his stomach.

Because the stomach was so contaminated, he was treated as an “open abdomen”. A wound vacuum was hooked up to his abdomen for several days in order to draw infection out. During this time, he was also treated with IV fluids, antibiotics, antinausea medication, hyperbaric oxygen treatments, and canine albumin transfusions. On 12/27, he was taken to surgery to close his abdomen. Unfortunately, his surgery sites started leaking again the following day. He required a third surgery in order to remove the unhealthy intestinal tissue. Additional treatments included blood transfusions and a change in antibiotics.

Our Purpose
We are on a mission to provide immediate safety and care to stray, abused and abandoned animals. Once we are assured animals are medically sound, we place them in a secure, temporary, no-kill environment. This immediate placement provides all the love and comfort necessary for their well being and allows us to get to know them. Then, we look for "forever" homes that are committed to their health and happiness for the duration of their lives. When we match an animal with a caring person or family, Buddy is truly fulfilling our purpose of lighting the way home.

Our Goal: No more homeless pets!

Sadly, 4 to 6 million animals are euthanized each year, the equivalent of 575 every hour. Buddy seeks to reduce that number. We will continue our mission of saving those that cannot fend for themselves, those without a voice, and those who depend on the good will of humanity for their basic needs.

Buddy also wants to change the perception of an animal shelter. Here, at our new location in Arlington Heights, IL, we provide a safe haven for these special creatures. Each animal is given the one-on-one attention it deserves. The shelter allows Buddy the ability to evaluate each animal’s needs and find a perfect home for as many as possible. If just the right home cannot be found, our animals will stay with us as long as they live.

We want our sanctuary to be thought of as a place of peace. God gives us the animals to share our lives and in return he expects us to protect them and keep them safe. At Buddy, we live by and spread this message, keeping the memory of one special Buddy alive forever.

We need your help!

Please help us rescue more animals, find loving homes for animals, and educate the public about the proper care of pets. There are many ways to help. We need ideas, volunteers, foster families and donations to keep the spirit of Buddy alive and to enable The Buddy Foundation to light the way home.

Buddy Foundation is a volunteer not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) organization with all funds directly assisting our animals.
