Ira's Fund for Recovery & Success

$61,830 of $30,000 goal

Less than a year ago, Ira was living the special life he built.  A successful and universally-respected sports journalist in New York City, a devoted son, brother, uncle and friend to so, so many people.  Ira is passionate about his career, but cares most about the people in his life.

Then suddenly, normalcy has been put on hold with a brain tumor and then a stroke.  The switch from activity and independence to the daily grind towards recovery is startling and so much to mentally grapple with.  It's so hard to recognize the steps forward since they occur so slowly.  But thanks to the love of family and friends, and dedication of amazing doctors, nurses, and therapists, Ira is moving in the right direction.

We have to help Ira keep his eye on the prize- and that prize is a full recovery and return to the amazing life and love that he cherishes so very much.

The path to recovery will progress over time, and he needs our help to walk him down that rough road.  After all, we all know that Ira is the absolute first person who would take the shirt off his back and give what he has for any one of us!

In order to give Ira the environment to recover and return, we need to pull resources to install the special facilities that he needs so that he can live at home under the care and loving attention of his mom, Ellen.  Your contribution will be such a massive piece of the bridge to carry Ira back to independence and normalcy.  With the installation of a specialized bathroom, wheelchair-accessible arrangements, and a whole host of integral construction needs, Ira will be placed in a position to keep fighting back.

Let's band together and lift Ira on our collective shoulders.   It's going to be so great when Ira is back to being Ira!!

Much progress has been made recently, and Ira is beginning to experience a bit more normalcy. He regularly attends synagogue and went to see almost every film nominated for best picture this year. Ira also had a blast going to a Rangers game- they won! Fresh off a four-week stint at Magee Rehab, Ira is now learning to drive a motorized wheelchair. He is hoping to get his own personal motorized wheelchair in the months to come. Most of all, Ira is looking forward to spending time with visitors at home. Ira’s sense of humor is truly amazing. When you come by for a visit, you will see just how his wit hasn’t changed one bit!!

Keep sending Facebook messages and emails to irapodell@icloud.com. On-line and in-person chit-chatting totally makes his day!

Lots of Love to all of you, his supporters and special people in his life.

Over the past couple of months, so much progress has been made. Ira is now able to get out and about in a specialized van. And, he'll be starting outpatient therapy at Magee! The combination of mobility and therapy hopefully will help Ira move ahead towards recovery. One thing that really kicks his spirit into high gear is corresponding with each one of you. Hearing about what his special friends are up to truly brightens his hours and days. Send him Facebook messages and emails! irapodell@icloud.com

In this Passover Season of overcoming adversity and remembering difficult times with the promise of sweeter days to come, Ira is experiencing the sweetest of homecomings. Over the past couple of weeks, Ira has settled in nicely, and is enjoying the personal comforts and sense of normalcy that comes with being Home. And this blessing is only possible because of the indescribable generosity and love of each one of you. Your outpouring of support has tailored Ira’s physical environment to attend to his special needs, while setting the stage for his continuing recovery. Borrowing a line, and giving it more meaning than one can imagine, Ira recently said: “There’s no place like home.” Just as you all are thinking of Ira, please know that he is also thinking of each one of you; and looks forward to blossoming with his roots planted firmly on his home turf!

Love, Ellen, Helene, David, Melanie, & Rebecca

On behalf of Ira, thank you so very much for your unbelievably touching support. Arrangements are already made to begin putting your generosity to work for Ira and his recovery efforts. Having undergone another surgery, Ira is heading in the right direction. Check out Ira sporting the Mets blue and orange! If everything stays on track, Ira should be situated comfortably at home soon, and working on getting stronger and stronger. We will keep you posted! In the meantime, your kindness is overwhelming and greatly appreciated. Ira is so fortunate to have such a support system made up of each one of you.

Much Love,
Ellen, Helene, David, Melanie, & Rebecca

Ira, Monte called me last night and told me what's going on...rotten. Via World Features Syndicate, we had phone interactions for so many years, I feel as though we have met...but even though I grew up a Pennsauken boy, we haven't. Helping you now is a no-brainer...whenever Ernie Gomez or I spoke with you, there was never drama, never any "Oh-crap-it's-a-pitching-change-pain-in-the-ass" thing--it was always professional. That meant a lot to us, because we always knew we were going to interrupt "something!" I recall speaking with you about Hofstra, as a best friend of mine went there too. So many years have gone by...and there are so many years remaining. From what I came to know of you at the A&P, you will recover from this obscenity, because you are one resolute man, even-keeled, and hopeful. Monte will keep me informed of your progress. My girlfriend Denise and I (and Ernie too) hope to see you visit us in southern California, where we will celebrate your return, and talk about Robbie and Monte behind their backs. Our very best to you, and to your loving Mom, and your own circle of friends and relatives who so obviously care greatly for you. Ron Sataloff
