To All Supporters of Children with Disabilities:
Eight Months ago, Anne Arundel County Public School—without the legally required documention, comprehensive testing, or parent participation— unlawfully determined Evan ineligible to receive special education services and abruptly removed the special education supports he had been trained to use in school for 5 years.
Since losing his supports, Evan has been unable to ride the bus each morning, or attend school on a regular basis. The school’s actions forced the family to obtain indefinite long-term legal services after multiple attempts to dispute the violations on their own continued to fail. The ongoing legal costs associated with challenging these violations have grown exponentially and have significantly exceeded what the family of 7 can afford.
Today, Evan needs your help to continue the pursuit of his legally entitled Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). We are trying to raise $10,000—a fraction of the expenses accrued so far— by February 1, 2015 in order to cover the legal costs associated with obtaining the individualized education supports and services that Evan requires to return to school regularly.
Like many other special needs families, Evan’s family knows they have a long road ahead. But the family is committed to this campaign to ensure that Evan and other disabled children are not denied the special education services they need in order to access a public education, and that families of disabled children are not denied their right to equally participate in their child’s individualized education program. The family doesn’t want what happened to their child to happen to other children. Please help send the message that families with disabled children will not be silenced.
