We (Ina and Matt) have been volunteering in the refugee camp in Idomeni, Greece by the Macedonian border. There are currently over 11,000 refugees living there, and roughly a 3rd of them are children. The conditions are very poor, with a lack of food, water, shelter, clothing and showers. People are bored, unable to work or go to school or move freely. There is little to no information given to the refugees on their situation and the next steps, and no sign of the border opening any time soon. 

Every morning we worked with Team Bananas. Team Bananas is working to feed vulnerable refugees in Idomeni, Greece, and is made up of independent volunteers. We distribute around 4500 bananas every day to children, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers. Part of what makes Team Bananas so special is our interaction with families as we distribute the bananas to parents to give to their children themselves. It is a tent by tent distribution to individuals, not to a queue which tend to be dominated by young strong men no matter what systems are put in place.



This project needs support to continue our important work. Everyday there are families who do are left out simply because we do not have enough. There is also demand rising in the satellite camps surrounding Idomeni for bananas - one of these camps, Eko, has 1400 children. We need your support to supply a healthy, nutritional breakfast to thousands of young children.


One banana costs 25 cents. 100 bananas costs just 25 euros. However we only have the funds for around 9 more days of banana distribution, people are pretty desperate right now and we’re worried about the situation once our breakfasts are no longer available for the women and children of Idomeni.

Every penny donated to us goes directly on bananas and nothing else, so it really does represent one of the most cost effective ways of feeding people here.
