The St. Louis Six: Cow Rescue

Donation protected
The Gentle Barn has stepped in to rescue and care for the six cows who successfully escaped from a slaughterhouse in North St. Louis Thursday, March 30th. The story of the escape was caught on local news, which quickly gained national attention and many online fundraising efforts to pay for the freedom of these courageous animals. Thank you to all the people who worked hard to raise awareness and funds to help save these amazing cows. They are now safe, but need a lot of additional care.

Jay Weiner, Co-founder of The Gentle Barn Foundation, is currently on-site with the cows and is working with veterinarians at the Large Animal Veterinary Health Center at the University of Missouri to provide much needed medical attention to the cows.  The six cows were very stressed through the entire ordeal and while they have started to settle in and have begun to relax, it is clear that there have been injuries sustained from the manner in which they were contained that has required additional medical attention.

These cows having been destined for slaughter and brought across state lines did not require the health documents to remain in the sate of Missouri. Now that they have been rescued, a full set of heath certifications are now required. Medical care, feed, and boarding at the University of Missouri will be costly, so please make a contribution so we can provide them with the care they most desperately need.

The Gentle Barn Foundation is still trying to determine where the cows will go, but one thing is for certain, they will get to live out the rest of their lives in peace.

The Gentle Barn (www.gentlebarn.org) is a national nonprofit organization, founded in 1999 as a safe haven and place of recovery for severely abused animals. The Gentle Barn offers their unique philosophy of rehabilitating animals and connecting their stories of survival and healing to the personal experiences of inner city, at-risk and special needs children who have suffered physical, mental or emotional trauma. By interacting with The Gentle Barn’s approximate one hundred and eighty animals and taking a hands-on role in their welfare, those who participate in the programs at The Gentle Barn learn empathy, trust and forgiveness. The Gentle Barn’s mission is simple: “Teaching People Kindness and Compassion to Animals, Each Other and Our Planet.”
