Expedition For Spinal Injuries

Donation protected
A good friend of mine, Mauro Amato, was left paralyzed after an accident in 2009.  He’s taught me a lot over the years, and he’s been a great friend.  This ride around the country will be dedicated to him.  The plan is to collect $60,00 or more to be donated to research and/or rehabilitation for people with spinal injuries.  We haven’t decided which organization yet, but I’ll keep you posted.  I’m letting Mauro choose the organization, which will be in South Florida.

My plan is to do a circumnavigation of the lower 48 States in an uninterrupted, unassisted solo trip.  I’ll be riding through 33 or 34 states (my route isn’t set in stone) over a period of about 190 days (5 months).  I’ll be starting from Southernmost Point in Key West, FL, and riding clockwise around the country back to Key West.  I’ll be leaving at the end of March, and I hope to be back in Key West by the end of September.

I originally planned to do this trip in 2016, but it's just not logistically possible.  Between training and raising the money, it will most likely be 2018 or 2019.

Although I’ll be alone on the road, I do need a lot of support to make this trip and the ending donation happen.  Probably the biggest obstacle will be expense.  Of course, when planning a road trip properly you need to hope for the best and PLAN FOR THE WORST.  (It was on a long trip like this that Mauro was injured.)  To that end, I'll be seeking corporate sponsorship to offset the cost of the trip.

I plan to train hard this summer and winter.  Meeting my 190 day time table will depend on not having too many delays (weather, mechanical, etc.).  This will be a grueling trek, and I want to average 100 miles a day on flat land (60-70 in hills and mountains) so I can meet my 190 day time table.

I’m maintaining a Facebook page on this Expedition with updates before, during, and after the trip:

facebook.com/TheContinentalExpedition.

There will be more information there.  I’m aiming big with my goal because the more extra funds I can raise, the more I can donate when it’s over.  I’d love to be able to donate a huge check at the end of the ride.  I have set our goal at $60,000.  Please help me make that a reality.
