Shaina's Fight With Breast Cancer
Donation protected
Please help Shaina kick cancer’s butt!
My sister, Shaina, was diagnosed on October 27th, 2014, with Stage Two Breast Cancer which genetics proved to be caused by a BRCA2 mutation; a heredity condition that inhibits the body's ability to repair damaged DNA and causes early onset breast and ovarian cancers in women. This news came as a shock to our family as she is only 26 years old, and we do not have a family history of breast cancer. Breast cancer at any age is a difficult diagnosis to receive, but given her age and genetic predisposition, there are additional challenges such as fertility preservation and an invasive surgery with long recovery time.
Shaina is staying optimistic about her treatment and will begin with a double mastectomy and reconstruction in January, 2015. Having the BRCA2 gene mutation will also require her to have an oophorectomy later down the road.
Due to the nature of her treatment she will need to undergo costly fertility preservation which is not covered by insurance. The long term treatment and recurrent doctors appointments will put her out of work for an extended period of time and our goal is raise money to offset the costs of treatment, medical bills, student loans (unable to be paid during period of no income) and time off from work.
I am asking for your help on her road to recovery. Even the slightest donation would be greatly appreciated and would help get us closer to our goal. Shaina is a very strong individual and I know she will be able to overcome this obstacle but needs some help.
Shaina graduated from Drexel University’s LeBow College of Business in 2010, and currently works in Washington D.C.
