This is my sister, Shabreka Stroble....after her heart attack and stroke.
She is 44 years old, the mother of two children, a graduate of Albany State University and an AKA sorority member. I’ve always viewed her as one of the strongest and smartest women I’ve known, just like our Mom, the late Rubye Stroble was.
She is hard working and giving and one whom I’ve admired and have always been inspired by. Shabreka loves being thought of as a fashionista and has a great sense of style. She has determination and dreams and has worked hard to be successful and to take care of her children and help her family. She is vibrant with a great sense of humor and keeps others laughing and smiling with her quick wit.
Last year, Shabreka fell ill and went to the hospital where she collapsed and her heart stopped. Medical staff performed CPR on her for more than 30 minutes, essentially bringing her back from a grave fate and saving her life. Her road after this has challenged the whole family and has changed our lives. Shabreka was on life support and in a coma for 3 months. Doctors gathered her loved ones and told the family to prepare for the worse. They did not expect for Shabreka to make it and asked if we wanted to take her off of life support. We were told that she had brain damage and even if she survived, her life would never be the same. Shabreka was not expected to ever walk or talk again.
Shabreka had family, friends, friends of friends, co-workers of family and friends as well as new acquaintances and anybody else we could think of praying for her. We knew she was a fighter and her family begged and pleaded with doctors to keep her on life support long enough to give her a fighting chance to make it. Prayer works and God answers prayers because Shabreka did make it and she has done just about everything the Doctors said she would not be able to do. She’s not fully recovered and is undergoing rehabilitation for her speech and mobility but Doctors are calling her a medical miracle.
I am smiling at what I’ve always known about my sister and that is that she’s one tough resilient lady. She has not given up on life and we have not given up on her. She has her daughter to finish raising and she has a lot to live for. Since her illness, Shabreka has not been able to return to work and there are some financial challenges to overcome to support herself and her kids.
We are a proud family and it’s difficult to ask for help but one thing I learned a long time ago is that no one gets through life by themselves. There will come a time in most people’s lives where you will need someone else’s help for something. That time has come for us and at this time we humbly request for financial support and donations on behalf of Shabreka as she continues to recover.
No donation is too small.
We appreciate you listening to Shabreka's story.
We thank you in advance. God Bless.
Sincerely,
The Stroble Family
