Scott Field Project

Drive past the blighted Coatesville Scott Field Stadium, prior to the start of the Scott Field Project, and you would have seen a boarded up press box, fenced off bleachers needing repaired, graffiti everywhere, and trash and debris laying all over;  a stadium that was in need of significant repairs and improvements, that had been neglected for decades.
There are many in our community that remember the ‘good old days’ when you could find just about everyone packed into the stands at Scott Field, watching their home team, the Coatesville Red Raiders football team, squaring off against their opponents on any given Saturday.
That is what was on the mind of Steve Kirk, coach and vice-President of Coatesville Kid Raiders (CKR), when
he stepped onto Scott Field to coach his first little league football game.  A vision soon emerged after speaking with CKR parents, coaches, and multiple community members, as to how to bring the community together to revitalize Scott Field, for the Coatesville Area School District, Coatesville Kid Raiders (CKR) and the community.

Our kids work hard, train hard, and are all-around AMAZING CHILDREN! Our coaches and parents are unbelievably dedicated, and demonstrate an overwhelming level of commitment to our organization. Our community deserves a field that looks as beautiful on the outside, as we are on the inside, and a stadium that is safe for all community members, students, spectators, parents, coaches and players to enjoy! Our community deserves that same old Scott Field that brought people together in the 'good old days.'

Steve Kirk, coach and vice-President of Coatesville Kid Raiders(CKR), along with his wife, Shannon Kirk, on behalf of multiple community members, CKR parents and coaches, proposed this project to the Coatesville Area School District (CASD) school board, and successfully received approval in early, 2017,  to proceed with the much needed improvements to Coatesville's Scott Stadium, through the Scott Field Project!

With the help of several local contractors and businesses ( GP Martini Roofing, SWI Wholesalers, McKeon Concrete and Masonry, AJB, Mighty Log Tree Service, Structural Design Associates, Topside Landscaping, Electrical Plus), who agreed to volunteer some of the needed supplies and labor, Phase One got underway to revitalize the stadium, and give our youth a safe, beautiful place to call home.

Phase 1: Start date for the project was April 22, 2017 which was also our first official community Field clean up day at Scott Field.  We had approximately 110 community volunteers show up for our kick-off day! We worked for 10 hours, clearing debris from the entire property, ripping out the old fencing, and old bleacher benches, as well as complete demolition of the press box.  The entire GP Martini Roofing crew, alongside McKeon Masonry and Topside Landscaping, was on deck that day, with all of their work trucks, tools, and materials.
Following that date, we had community work days each and every Sunday, starting at 7:30am, and working 8-10 hours each time, until Phase One completion, at the end of  August, 2017.

Phase 1 of the project, included complete demolition of the press box, removal/disposal of bleacher seats, and fencing that was around the bleachers; rebuilding and repairing the bleachers and the press box; clean up of the property landscaping- including seeding, tree removal, and clearance in back corners of the property; clean out and repairs made to small shed, and old snack shack (including a new roof and new paint) at the far end of the stadium; overseeding of the football field; installation of fencing poles and a neon rope around the perimeter of the football field; sanding/painting of the field goal posts;  all needed electrical work, including the installation of a new PA system (funded by Coatesville School District); painting the entire front and sides of the concrete bleacher structure, and many needed concrete repairs.

Additionally, with Phase 1 donations we were able to purchase a customized football helmet tunnel for our youth CKR football teams and cheerleaders to utilize during games.  We also purchased a used Yerf dog utility cart to help make set up and clean up at the field more efficient during home games.  Finally, we purchased several new trash cans for the stadium.

A HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL BUSINESSES AND INDIVIDUALS WHO MADE PHASE ONE POSSIBLE.  A SPECIAL THANKS TO DERRICK MORGAN OF THE TENNESSEE TITANS, WHO MADE A GENEROUS DONATION OF $10,000 TOWARDS PHASE ONE, AND GP MARTINI ROOFING WHO NOT ONLY MADE A $1,000 CASH DONATION, BUT ALSO PROVIDED $20,000 IN MATERIALS AND LABOR.

(Mural/Training Wall built at Scott Field during Phase Two, artwork by: Dre Boggs (local Coatesville artist)

Phase Two of Scott Field Project was approved by the CASD school board in February, 2018, and work began in April, 2018.  Improvements and work completed as part of Phase Two included Sponsor signs from phase one purchased and hung at stadium; Home and away Bleachers were stained; area underneath bleachers- inside concrete structure, and old bathrooms were cleaned out (in preparation to renovate); three windows on backside of concrete structure were blocked in with new concrete; outdoor training area cleared of trees/debris -wall built mural painted on the training wall by a local community member, turf transported to field, dumbbells and other workout equipment purchased; general landscaping maintenance and field clean up; new floor installed in press box; electric run underground for the customized tunnel; and collaboration/planning with local artists (Dre Boggs and others) on planning very large mural for backside of concrete structure.
Thank you to our 2018 sponsors:  West End Fire Co., Coatesville Moose, First Resource Bank, Citadel Federal Credit Union, Tri-Corner Homes, Coatesville Savings Bank, Harry's Neighborhood Place, and Chertok's Furniture.

We would also like to thank all who nominated Steve for awards in 2018, that resulted in us receiving the CASD Martin Luther King Community Service Award; the Citadel R.S.V.P. Community Hero Award, and the Brandywine Health Foundation Eastburn Community Service Award.

For the continuation of Phase Two in 2019, and Phase Three in 2020, our goals are to continue developing the outdoor training facility for our young Coatesville athletes to utilize, as well as fundraise for the construction of a large indoor training facility at Scott Field.  As part of this plan, members of Scott Field Project will take courses to become certified youth fitness trainers, we will install a designated area of turf, as well as multiple pieces of training equipment.  In other areas of the stadium, we will continue to make needed concrete repairs to the backside of the concrete bleacher structure.  Further, we plan to install men and women’s bathrooms.  If funds and time allow, we would like to install new fencing, and explore options for renovating the snack shack.  We estimate that we will need to raise $130,000 in cash donations, as well as obtain in-kind donations of materials, equipment, and labor, in order to achieve all of the above goals.

WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK OUR FIRST SPONSOR OF 2019, THE BRANDYWINE HEALTH FOUNDATION, FOR THEIR GENEROUS $2,000 GRANT TOWARDS THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE OUTDOOR TRAINING FACILITY.
