Scooting4Donors

$13,570 of $50,000 goal

Raised by 91 people in 10 months
As a 4-time kidney transplant recipient, I know the need for organ donors. Four donors saved my life! Scooting 4Donors is a cross-country awareness campaign to register as many people as I can to the national organ donor registry. I will be driving a mobility scooter for this trip! In addition to kidney disease, I was born with bilateral hip dysplasia. Both of my hips are dislocated. I have gotten around relatively ok for the past 42 years, but age has worn my hips down and I now need to use a mobility scooter for long distances. I would say cross-country is a pretty long distance!

Starting on April 1, 2019 (National Organ Awareness Month), I will be traveling the country in five stages. Stage One will follow my transplant journey through the two states I have lived in for the majority of my life and received all four of my transplants. I will begin in Miami, Florida at Jackson Memorial Hospital where my mother gave me her kidney on August 26, 1987. I will travel north through Florida to Atlanta, Georgia where I received my final three kidneys. First will be Children's Healthcare of Atlanta where my father gave me his kidney on October 6, 1994. I will then go across the street where my brother Kevin gave me his kidney on October 7, 1999 at Emory Hospital.  Finally, I will visit Piedmont Healthcare where I received my last kidney on February 24, 2016 from my hero, angel donor who selflessly donated after passing away.

Stage Two continues through Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas. I will end Stage Two in Dallas, Texas where I was born on June 30, 1976 and where doctors told my parents I wouldn't live more than two years. Stage Three will start the long roads through Texas, Oklahoma to Denver, Colorado, one of my favorite places to visit. Stage Four continues through Colorado to Wyoming and Montana where I will go through the beautiful Yellowstone Park. The campaign will end after Stage Five when I go through Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, Nevada and finally ending in San Francisco, California. That's a total of 14 states!

Along the way, I will have transplant center visits and special awareness events. The entire purpose of this is to raise the organ donor registry in each state I visit and the national registry to help the 114,000+ patients waiting for a life saving organ.

After more generous donations, I am planning to continue the trek! I will be leaving from Nashville on September 1 and heading to Dallas, TX. Dallas is the city I was born in and the exact halfway point using mileage! I can wait to get back on the road and get more people registered to be organ donors.

Thank you again for all of your help and I hope to see you on the road!

I have gone 1,500 miles from Miami to Nashville. Unfortunately, I have had to stop my trip due to lack of funds. Please share my GoFundMe and read the article below to see where I am at now.

Stage One has been completed! I couldn’t have done it without the $8,000 I received from this fundraiser. Right now I am volunteering at Camp Braveheart. It is a camp for children with heart disease and heart transplants.

I will be continuing Scooting4Donors and starting Stage Two on June 4th. Stage Two will take me from my home in the Atlanta area to Dallas, TX, via Nashville, TN.

Please continue sharing this page and my story so I can continue Scooting4Donors!
