March for Science Townsville Rally
Donation protected
The goal of science is to better understand all facets of the world in which we live, and use that understanding to improve the lives of all. Scientific research is crucial for medical advances that save lives, creating new technology that makes day to day activities more convenient, and aim to protect iconic landscapes like the Great Barrier Reef.
Townsville's March for Science is a rally in solidarity with other marches and rallies held around the world, to call for increased support of science, a cessation of the misuse of science for political gain, and a demand that leaders use evidence-based science to better the lives of their constituents.
Our Mission:
The March for Science celebrates the public discovery, distribution, and understanding of scientific knowledge as crucial to the freedom, success, health, and safety of life on this planet. We are a nonpartisan group, marching to demand action in the following areas: Literacy, Communication, Policy, and Funding.
Universal Literacy: A well-informed community is essential to a free and successful society. We support education to promote broad public knowledge and discussion of scientific work. As professionals, parents, and community-engaged volunteers, we enthusiastically contribute our time and expertise to helping children and students of all ages engage with the physical universe and biological world.
Open Communication: Publicly-funded scientists have a responsibility to communicate their research and public outreach and accessibility of scientific knowledge should be encouraged. Communication of scientific findings and their implications must not be suppressed.
Informed Policy: Public policy should be guided by peer-reviewed evidence and scientific consensus. Public policy must enable scientists to communicate their publicly-funded research results, and must support literacy in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Stable Investment: A long-term, strategic approach to investment in scientific research and development is essential for driving true innovation. Government commitment to stable science funding policy will deliver solutions to complex challenges, promoting prosperity for all.
This rally is for everyone, because science is FOR everyone and can be conducted BY everyone. We will have activities for all age groups and speakers from various fields of science as well as non-scientists.
The rally will be held in Strand Park on April 22nd (Saturday), from 11-3. It will include speakers, a panel discussion with audience Q&A, scientific demonstrations/exhibitions of some of the science conducted in Townsville, and live music.
Costs associated with the rally include Public Liability Insurance (~$700), ambos (~$400), promotional material, equipment rental, band, unforseen fees, etc.
Please help support the March for Science Townsville, so that we can hold a successful event!
