About Him:
Strider is a 1 year old male German Shepherd/Golden Retrieve mix who was rescued from Animal Humane Society in St. Paul, MN in September of 2015. He was surrendered at 10 months old when his owner was moving. He now lives in Santa Rosa, CA and is enjoying the warmer weather. He is extremely playful, loves other dogs, enjoys hiking and playing at the beach, and gets compliments daily on how handsome he is.
Spring has sprung in Santa Rosa and Strider couldn't be happier!

About Me:
I am Allison, a 24 year old who recently moved from Minnesota to California to pursue a career training service dogs with Canine Companions for Independence. I worked for the animal shelter that Strider was surrendered to and fell in love with him the instant he walked through the door. I love being outdoors - hiking, skiing, and swimming are my favorite activities, and I have a passion for animal behavior.

Why we need your help!
Just like humans, some animals develop anxiety disorders. After adopting Strider, I discovered that he has a severe case of separation anxiety. He is unable to be left alone in the house for any amount of time without having a full panic attack, constantly barking, risking his own safety, and destroying items in the home. It has gotten to the point where he can never be left alone, and is in need of some behavior modification that I cannot provide on my own. Luckily, I found an amazing trainer who specializes in this disorder, and I will be able to work with her over the course of a few months in order to help Strider overcome his anxiety.

Here is some more information about separation anxiety.

The treatment is expensive and requires him to not be left alone at any point other than during practice sessions, so he will be going to doggy daycare when I am at work. Together, the treatment and the daily daycare are adding up to be a few thousand dollars, and I am unable to afford that on my own.

Why should I donate?
Dogs with separation anxiety are automatic euthanasias at many animal shelters, and it is often regarded as the most difficult behavior problem to treat. Strider is my best friend and I am willing to go above and beyond to make sure that he is able to stay around for many more years. Unfortunately, I have already spent thousands of dollars on days at daycare, behavior consultations, and a veterinary behaviorist who suggested that I simply medicate him to the point of sedation for his entire life. None of these avenues have been what he needs, and I finally found a trainer who has experience with his specific condition who is willing to help him get better.

I have had countless people tell me that I should "just put him down," but I refuse to do that until there are no other options. With your help, I will be able to try one more avenue for him - specific behavioral treatment and modification - that will allow me the freedom to leave my house without worrying that he is going to hurt himself, eliminate his panic attacks, and give him the happy, anxiety-free life that he deserves.

Both he and I couldn't be more thankful for anything you are willing to donate to get his treatment in action as soon as possible.
