Rescue Cat Lifesaving Treatment

 His name is Sam and he is a stray we rescued 3 years ago.  This month we found out he has high level hyperthyroidism and needs iodine treatment. After speaking with our local clinic, we found that it would cost $3250 for the treatment and his boarding for the week of treatment, plus a chest x-ray.  We met Sam when he started stopping by our backyard in August of 2015, and would roll around accepting a few pets and a bowl of food  whenever we saw him. We already had one cat who seemed really comfortable being an only cat so we did not think he would be a good fit. We bought a plastic tote and built him a shelter from the rain in the backyard, and asked around to see if anyone was missing a cat, or would be interested in taking one in. In October we saw animal control up the block and when we stopped to see what was going on we found out that he was being considered a nuisance animal for lying in the road, and there was a chance he might be put down if a placement couldn't be found for him.  Someone in the group tat had gathered said they would be willing to pay for the vet fees if anyone was willing to take him in. We thought about it and decided to try to see if we  could keep him. While our first cat has not been too happy with his presence, and he was not the happiest indoor cat, we stuck with it, worked through his quirks, and now know him to be a sweet and loving cat. We are hoping that we can raise at least a good portion of the cost to get Sam the treatment he needs to live a full life. He is estimated to be around 5 years old, and has quite a few years left ahead of him. Our veterinarian said it would be the least invasive treatment, and would be the most effective one for him. Radioactive Iodine treatment is said to cure the disease about 97% of the time. Surgery can cause other health issues and there is a chance it could come back. Just taking pills can extend his life by 3-5 years. The iodine treatment can make it possible for him to live into his senior years.
