Save Echo Farms

Donation protected

Save Echo Farms is a grassroots, non-partisan campaign mobilized to protect & preserve the greenspace that is presently Echo Farms golf course. Save Echo Farms will explore political, legal, environmental, public relations and any other means possible to protect the golf course, wetlands, nature preserve, wildlife, existing homeowners and tenants, and all the benefits the land currently provides.

The Echo Farms community and golf course began in the 1970’s. The project was developed as a whole, with a symbiotic intention between the nature preserve, wetlands, homes streets and golf course. The Echo Farms community is a middle class development with a mix of retired homeowners and families. Many in the community are on limited budgets. These homeowners facing a developer with millions of dollars and scores of attorneys and they need your help. If this development is allowed to occur, it’s likely homeowners will lose up to 30% of their equity. For many this is the bulk of their savings.

The city of Wilmington is currently experiencing an explosive level of growth. Schools are overcrowded, roads are beyond capacity and greenspace is disappearing at an alarming rate. Currently there are thousands of homes planned within a 3 mile radius of Echo Farms and nearly every available significant plot of land is under assault. Though there is a bond issue on the ballot for November addressing the need for parks, the fear is there will be no large, open spaces left to preserve by the time the monies are available.

The money donated to Save Echo Farms will be used to set up and run this movement, The Save Echo Farms board is currently being formed to help guide the effort to hire environmental and other specialty attorneys, launch an aggressive public relations campaign, develop a strong and effective line of communication, launch an informative and interactive website, purchase marketing tools (advertising, billboards, flyers, yard signs, bumper stickers, etc.), and to reach out and engage our city, county and state elected officials. We will try to permanently address this issue on a local and state level, so if you live on a privately owned golf course, it is likely in your best interest to see us succeed. In addition to these listed plans of action, we will explore all other worthwhile avenues to help protect this invaluable land.

We are in need of immediate funds to help advance this cause. This is one of the few middle class golf courses open to the public in the county. There are thousands of homeowners at risk, with limited funds and means, and they need our protection. The wildlife that relies on this open space (which drains directly into Barnards Creek and ultimately the Cape Fear River), also needs protection. Help us preserve our dwindling greenspace. Any amount you can give will be greatly appreciated.
