Our daughter, Sadie, was born prematurely at 33 weeks. As a result of this, she was in NICU for 54 days.
At 5 days old she was diagnosed with Intraventricular Hemorrhage (IVH), as well as Hydrocephaly. Her IVH is Grade 3 on the right side of her brain, Grade 4 (most severe) on the left side of her brain. Because of this, she had her first surgery to insert a reservoir on top of her head to drain off excess Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) from the ventricles affected by the IVH in her brain. This was done so that she didn't have to endure spinal taps every few days to drain fluid and after a blockage occurred that prevented the medical team from being able to perform spinal taps. The reservoir was used until Sadie had gained enough weight to be eligible for the permanent VP shunt placement on the back of her head, which was her second operation. She also had a double inguinal hernia that was later repaired in a third operation.
Due to her NICU stay and 3 operations, she incurred medical bills in excess of $250,000.00. Insurance coverage paid over half, but left us with a remaining balance of $75,000.00. Thankfully we are able to make payments and was able to negotiate a lower balance owed. All donations made go directly to the hospital to pay the balance leftover.
