#STEM Camps for Underserved Youth

Who is hEr VOLUTION and why are we doing this? 



hEr VOLUTION is an award-winning nonprofit organization providing innovative education and employment services to girls and young women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). Our mission is to advance education by providing workshops and instructional seminars on topics relating to STEM for low income and marginalized youth with a focus on girls and young women.

In 1987, only 20 % of the people working in STEM fields were female, a number that has only raised up to 22 % to date. While there is a lot of buzz around this issue, not enough is being done to include women in these fields or focus on diversity beyond gender.



In order to encourage and make opportunities accessible for underserved youth in STEM, hEr VOLUTION is looking to raise funds to help deliver various STEM summer camps to include youth from underserved communities in the GTA. Thus far, 30 participants per year have been successfully served through camps and, with your help, we are looking to increase this by 70 participants this year! 



To encourage diversity and inclusion we will have mixed camps under 2 pillars: 

* Camps that focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Space 
* Camps with a 50/50 ratio of girls and boys of young ages. 

We strongly believe that in order to increase the number of girls and young women in STEM, we need to "normalize" equity in gender learning at a young age. Therefore, mixing girls and boys and teaching them the same way,  promotes higher self-esteem and confidence amongst girls while reinforcing that boys and girls are equally talented in STEM. 



The camps will introduce youth to innovative skill-building and problem-solving opportunities such as science, technology, innovative coding learning experience, and life skills.

The delivery of the programs is centred upon innovative aspects reflected by the facilitators. The facilitators will be professionals in the field bringing real-life experience from the workplace into the classroom. 

There are numerous benefits to STEM education, especially when pursued for the right reasons. Which is why we believe that STEM camps are the best way to discover new passions. Yes, some youth already know what they want to pursue as a career, however, youth from underserved communities are not always exposed to STEM education in the same capacities as their peers. A lack of exposure and opportunities can prevent them from learning about themselves and the world around them.
