It all started when two fellow seniors (Andrew Lally and Dominic Watkins) and I (Luke Wilmes) founded a Gaelic Football Team at Saint Louis University High School. We were inspired to create the team after watching a YouTube video in our Irish Literature class.

I reached out to my cousin who played in the St. Louis Gaelic Athletic Club to see if he could give us some pointers. Dom, Andrew, and I went to a STL GAC practice in Forest Park and fell in love with the sport.

I ended up joining the league for the 2017 season with the Happy Apples and got 2nd place in the playoffs. On the SLUH homefront, I managed to get the St. Louis Blues to sponsor us, giving us December 1st as a night to sell tickets for. Every ticket we sell with the promo code, we get $5 back.

If GoFundMe isn't your preferred way of donating, please consider going to the Blues game on December 1st vs. the LA Kings. Information is below:

Since September, the SLUH team has been practicing every Monday and the occaisional Wednesday. We had our first scrimmage against the STL GAC and got crushed, but it was a great learning experience for the SLUH players.

We are a club of 50+ people. We are asking for sponsors to help subsidize the cost of Gaelic Football jerseys.  Our hope is that we would have our goal met by December 2017 so we can have a fantastic Christmas.

As a Catholic Jesuit High School, we cannot accept money from any companies supporting drug/alcohol use.

(About Gaelic Football)
Gaelic Football is an Irish sport similar to rugby and soccer. The Gaelic Football looks like a volleyball, but is heavier than a soccer ball. Each team has 15 players; 1 goalie, 3 full backs, 3 half-backs, 2 midfielders, 3 half-forwards, and 3 full forwards.

The goals are similar to soccer goals, but with an American Football field goal on top. Points are scored in two different ways. 1 point can be scored if a player kicks or punches the ball over the cross
bar and through the uprights. 3 points can be scored if the ball is kicked or punched out of the air into the goal.

The ball can be kicked or picked up and run with. To pass, a player must hit the ball out of his hand with an open palm or a closed fist; he cannot throw the ball.

The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

The game is SUPER fast paced and is a hidden gem among sports.

Shoutout to my great cousin and friend Matt Green for getting me hooked on such an amazing sport.

Happy Thanksgiving from the Sluatha De Danaan, aka the SLUH Gaelic Football Team. As a club, we have a lot to be thankful for. We'd like to thank the STL Gaelic Athletic Club for all of their support, from scrimmaging with us to adopting us into the club. Their care and generosity really helped us get on our feet.

We'd also like to personally thank the GoFundMe sponsors: Rob Mohler, A&J Krause, and Eric Seyfert. Your donations mean the world to us. Without your help, we probably wouldn't be getting jerseys and balls.

Another thank you shout-out to Eric Weber, who has helped the club with jersey deals with Azzurri and is trying to get funding directly from the GAA to help us.

We'd like to thank everyone who has bought St. Louis Blues tickets to our fundraiser night on December 1st against the LA Kings. Their support also helps with maintaining the team expenses and we couldn't be more grateful.

Thank you to everyone who has helped the SLUH Gaelic Football Team get a running start. We would truly be lost without you.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Practice #3 was a big hit! We finally got to play on the SLUH turf and we've had our biggest turnout yet; 12 Gaelic Gents! We had 7 guys return to practice and 5 newbies come out for the first time. The newbies picked up the basics pretty quickly and we eventually scrimmaged half-field 5 v 6 with Mr. Kavanaugh in the net. The redshirts put up a good fight, but eventually fell to the mixed bunch 1-2 to 0-2. Shoutout to ZACK (not Jack) BIEVENUE for scoring the very first points (goal) of SLUH Gaelic Football. Great job to all the guys who showed up. See you next week.
