Brice Maslanka (13 years old) was diagnosed with Anaplastic Large T Cell Lymphoma in March (2016).
Lymphoma is the most common type of blood cancer. It occurs when cells of the immune system called lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell, grow and multiply uncontrollably. Cancerous lymphocytes can travel to many parts of the body, including the lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow, blood, or other organs, and form a mass called a tumor.
When we first approached Jeff and Amie about setting up a GoFundMe account so that others could help (financially) in Brice's fight - they were very hesitant. Jeff's exact words were "I don't want any money from my friends, family or people that I don’t even know!"
However, we pushed them harder, - letting them know that there are friends and family that can't bring a meal over or lend a hand with daily chores - but they still want to help. In addition, the reality is that a fight against cancer can carry significant economic burdens due to growing medical costs, missed work and travel costs related to receiving treatment. The last thing someone needs to deal with at a time like this is additional financial stress.
While the total financial burden that this will place on the Maslankas is impossible to guess - at this point, they already have over $20,000 in medical bills (co-insurance) that they are responsible to pay for. With Brice's fight just beginning, their share of the expenses is sure to be 5 to 10 times that!
For those of you who want to help during Brice's fight - your generosity is greatly appreciated! It will be used to help make this difficult chapter a little easier to take.
