Interested in supporting and encouraging students pursuing STEM careers?
Invest in the San Diego City Robotics Club. You’ll be partnering with an innovative team at City College providing hands-on robotics experience for local college students. Your donation will also help our growing and energetic club take robotics out to San Diego school children.

Every gift makes a difference! Large universities are able to support clubs through department budgets. Community colleges don’t provide any such support: Our club is completely dependent upon donations. Your help is greatly appreciated, and you can trust that the club is careful to stretch every dollar. We were founded in 2007 and are getting ready for our 10th competition.

What will your donation go towards? Our club is organized by volunteers. Club leaders also volunteer with Fab Lab, a local maker space, who in return lets us use their machines and tools. Your donation will go towards the actual mechanical parts needed for our robots.

The Robots:

The Submarine, Scarborough:

The highlight of our club is the development of a fully autonomous (unmanned and no human control) submarine for the annual international RoboSub competition here in San Diego. It’s an exciting week long event in Point Loma. It's also free to the public, so come cheer on our team! What happens before and after the competition is just as important. New students join the club unused to taking their ideas from inspiration to actual product. As club leaders, we encourage them to start experimenting and familiarize them with industry standards. In the months leading up to the competition we collaborate to design, test, and redesign. These are valuable skills we’ll take into our future careers. Plus it’s a lot of fun- frustrating, challenging, exciting and fun.

Submarine Goals, from our captain: This year our goal is to install stereo vision on our submarine. This would allow us to create real time detailed maps of the pool and recognize objects. We also need to incorporate a cooling mechanism through the main hull of our sub. Overheating proved to be a large problem for us last competition. Because of the overheating we lost some of our batteries, so we need to replace them and get spares.

Robotic Car Kits for Teaching and Outreach:

Your support will also help purchase starter robotic car kits. New club members start programming with an autonomous arduino car. Our club organizers have found that this is an excellent introduction to robotics. The cars react to their environment in real time, based on feedback from ultrasonic and infrared sensors. As we’re able to purchase more kits, our goal is to take the cars out into the local community and open the door of robotics to the school children around us. We have enough members to do this, but not enough kits. Your support can make the difference!

Sound like something you’d like to be a part of? Please make a donation today. Your gift is very much appreciated. Thank you for partnering with the San Diego Robotics Club!

RoboSub:

RoboSub is a competition in Point Loma, San Diego between student designed-and-built autonomous submarines. Submarines must go underwater and complete a series of tasks based on computer vision and sonar. These tasks can be anything from finding and following a sonar pinger to grabbing objects and placing them in correctly marked bins. Teams from Russia, China, Japan, Singapore, India, Europe come to San Diego to compete every year. The competition is put on by the AUVSI Foundation and the Office of Naval Research. It is held at SPAWAR’s TRANSDEC pool in Point Loma.
