SCA on the CDT in 2016

Thru-hiking is a pilgrimage, a transformative journey based in nature. I met my first Thru-hiker while on a Student Conservation Association (SCA) Crew at Crater Lake National Park in 2010. This big bearded, smelly, sweaty, yet endearing character was free and wild. He'd returned to nature. There was spark in his eyes. He sat down to lunch with us and asked of our story while telling his, a ribbon of experiences miles and miles long.

My name is Lizzy Corliss, known on the Trail as "Laugh Track". 4 years after meeting this character, I was wanting of his same experience. The Trail called. In 2014 my middle brother and I thru-hiked the 2,670 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail in one 5 month season. We were joined by a wild group of friends. Together we morphed and changed our world views and spirits, while having the time of our lives.

In 2015 I thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail, again mixing with an incredible "trail family" of rich characters. In 4 and 1/2 months we grew strong, adept, and charismatic amongst the roots, rocks, and crags of the trail. On this trail I met more then walkers.

While on the Appalachian Trail, my fellow hikers showed me an inspiring world of hiking FOR something. Specifically, a friend by the name of "Archangel", immediately post service in both Iraq and Afghanistan, chose to hike in honor and memory of two fallen comrades. During the last 5 miles of the journey he carried 2 five pound rocks engraved with their names. They were placed on top of the monumental end of this trail, Mount Katahdin. This act was above and beyond oneself.

I'd like to join these ranks of hiking FOR something, pay it forward. There is a 3rd and final hike in what is called the "Triple Crown" of thru-hiking. It is the Continental Divide, a trail that followes the ridge tops of the Rocky Mountain front. It is said to be 3,100 miles long, and take between 5-6 months to complete. I'd like to use every mile of this rigorous jaunt to benefit the Association that took part in inspiring me to get outside and partake in nature as a steward of it.

With your help, all funds raised will go to the Student Conservation Association. They are preparing the next generation of public land managers, environmental advocates, and world leaders. My hopes are that we can sponsor every one of the 3,100 miles of the Continetal Divide Trail with a 3 dollar donation to the SCA, in this triple crown venture. Would you join this cause, create more opportunities for kids to be inspired to return to nature and have a spark placed in their eyes?
