Hello,
My name is Amy Adams. I come to you with a request near and dear to my heart. My sister Jill and her husband Michael are expecting conjoined twin girls. We are still waiting to find out when they will make there appearance in this world. Jill will have to relocate soon to Houston in preparation of their arrival. The twins will remain there until more tests are done to determine 100% that they will be able to be separated. What we know right now: They are joined at the chest, and are fused at the liver and diaphragm with a small connection at their hearts which the surgeons believe are separable at this point. It will take further testing after their birth to determine if other connections exist and if those connections can be severed as well. If it is determined that they can be separated then Jill and Michael will have to stay longer in Houston until the girls get big and strong enough for the surgery. This process could take up to a year more or less.
They need help with mounting medical cost, living and travel expenses. Their next visit to Houston is coming up soon in November. We hope to have some funds by then to help with that visit. Any contribution is much needed and will be greatly appreciated.

In the past months the girls have come through a difficult recovery from the separation surgery. Hope in particular had a rough road. But both are doing well now and have been able to transition to our temporary home here in Houston. They are continuing their recovery with therapy for physical and eating skills development and are progressing well. Anna no longer has her feed tube and is becoming very verbal. She loves to sing You are My Sunshine, or at least the sun shine part, and likes to be bossy and mimic us when we are laying down the law with her brothers or sister. She has been scooting around and is getting better at crawling. She has also started to pull up and stand. Hope is still on the ventilator. She is sitting on her own and really wants to go like her sister. She is limited by the trach tubing though. She is a little go getter and has been working hard in therapy. They are working on scooting and standing with the ankle braces she was recently fitted for. She is also working towards drinking and eating with the hope to get her feed tube out. No doubt we have been very blessed throughout this amazing journey by God with medical miracles and recovery for the girls and those who lifted us up with support in so many ways. We are to a point with the girls’ status that we are ready to go home. However, we are facing some significant challenges with our home and car. We added two new babies, and all that babies normally need, plus Hope has a fair amount of equipment that is required to be with her at all times as well as around the clock nursing and a lot of supplies for caring for her trach and vent. She travels by ambulance to all of her appointments because we don’t all fit in the same vehicle when her wheelchair/stroller is in the car. Our home was tight on space before we added the girls. When our storage building blew away last spring we had to move those belongings into our home and a kind neighbor’s storage building. We can’t bring Hope home until the appropriate space is available for her and the equipment and the nurse to care for her. We have been so blessed. I know we haven’t come this far to be left. We are praying to get the financial support needed to get our family home.

On January 13th 2018 Anna Grace and Hope Elizabeth Richards were successfully separated. We are so very blessed and thankful. We are truly grateful for Gods gifts and the medical staff at Texas Children's Hospital. The girls are both doing well given the extent of the surgery they underwent. Anna is a little ahead of Hope and is off the ventilator. She is very active and vocal. Hope still remains on the vent, but she is making great progress. She may continue to need extra breathing support for a while. So much was changed in her little chest in those 7 hours of surgery. Each child has their own set of obstacles and we still have a long way to go. We also have challenges ahead in that our home and vehicle are not really suitable for the new size of our family and the girls' needs as well as the medical bills. That is why we continue to ask for support. We can't thank enough those who have given love, prayer, and financial support. So many have prayed and worked tirelessly to get us where we are today. It is so humbling to think of where we have come from and where we are today.

Update from Jill and Michael. 8/3/17 Our girls have just turned 7 months, the time has seemed to slip by quickly in the wash of routine and some not so routine events, and trying to keep up with our busy lives that are split between maintaining home, work, and babies living in the hospital. Anna and Hope are still doing well. The last CT of their livers and hearts revealed that their hearts are indeed as expected and a go for separation. Also they have one large blood vessel running from Hope’s liver to Anna’s heart and they need to address that before the main separation surgery which will still be some months in the future. This blood vessel has several branches at Hope’s liver and they started the process of shutting that vessel off by blocking one of those branches. Between taking pictures of their hearts and closing the blood vessel the surgery was from early morning to late at night. Somewhere in the middle of the procedure Hope’s blood vessel where the catheter was running started to spasm and have clotting of the blood. We cried and prayed and waited. It seemed like an eternity but eventually they called with the all clear and that they were continuing with the procedure. The first hours of their recovery was very emotional for all of us but the girls were soon back to themselves. The next procedure to block off another branch of this blood vessel will be happening in a few hours this Thursday morning. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers at this time for the girls to have a successful, uneventful procedure and for our family for peace in our hearts and comfort. Thank you.

Since I have not personally posted an update about our family for some months I will back track a bit. Our beautiful baby girls Anna Grace and Hope Elizabeth were born on December 29th. Considering their complicated situation no one really knew what to expect that day, so those first few sweet cries were a great relief that brought tears to our eyes. They have continued to amaze everyone with their progress. At birth Anna was clearly larger than Hope and we later learned that was because the blood flowed from the umbilical cord to Anna and then to Hope. Hope also has continued to require supplemental oxygen although now much less than at birth. She has been catching up to Anna in growth. About a month ago they had a detailed CT scan. This scan confirmed that their hearts are joined by a single blood vessel that is operable for separation. Their livers do have an area of fusion and there are some blood vessels crossing over through the livers. Their diaphragms are also fused. All of their other organs are separate. So far nothing has been found that would prevent separation surgery. A couple of weeks ago they had another CT of their livers to map the blood vessels for planning. We are waiting for the team of doctors to meet over the results. Although there are some struggles due to their connectedness the girls are doing well, growing, and developing their personalities. They have their mother’s beautiful blue eyes and both coo and talk to us in their adorable baby language. They both love watching Disney, and Hope in particular will coo when music from Little Mermaid or Tangled is playing. Anna is more interested in staring at mom when she holds them. They have been a wonderful blessing from God to us. I can’t help but be overwhelmed with emotion when I think of how they would not be here without the numerous people who have shown such love and care for them and for us: doctors who cared enough to hope with us and spend the countless hours it took to really look at what was there and the nurses who have been so kind and caring, all of our friends and family, our church family, and total strangers who have prayed for all of us, encouraged us and cried and celebrated with us, and provided financial support and places to stay, our families who stepped in to help us with the practical things and help us back at home. So many have given so much that there is no way we could ever thank them enough. There is still a long road ahead and we don’t know all that will come but we do know that God’s love has been sent to us in these beautiful girls and through those who have cared so much for us.
