In July 2015 Reuben suffered a minor burn three days later he was fighting for his life with toxic shock syndrome. Due to severity of the toxic shock Reuben has lost part of his fingers and had below knee amputations.
This fundraising is for Reuben to ensure he has access to the prosthetics, physiotherapy, sport activities and anything else he requires to live life to the full, so he can enjoy life like any other child.
This will be for the rest of his life hence
I will also be using his campaign to raise awareness on the links between burns and infection to try and prevent anyone else going through what he has.
The awareness is the most important part of the campaign and I hope to get a leaflet produced with a picture of Reuben and a short overview of what happened. Something along the following
Reuben had an accident and got burnt by an iron at home. 2 days later he was really lethargic, vomiting, feverish as well as having a rash on his legs. 3 days later he was in intensive care fighting for his life with suspected toxic shock syndrome. Every second counts and it is a life threatening condition. Save life and limbs think Reuben BEAR:
B - Burn. Recent burn or other injury?
E - Examine. Are there any signs of infection/sepsis:
High Fever
Flu like symptoms including headache, muscle aches, sore throat and cough
nausea and vomiting
diarrhoea
fainting or feeling faint/dizziness
A - Advice/Attend A & E
Toxic Shock and sepsis can be life threatening ensure you seek medical advice.
R - Referral. Ask for a referral to specialist burns unit if you have a burn and concerned that you may have sepsis/TSS.
With early diagnosis and treatment the outcome is likely to be full recovery.
He now has teddy bear stumps hence the Reuben Bear Campaign. I will be updating this once I have done
