Dear Friends and Family,
We have put together a team of Bay Area sailors and have been accepted to the International Women’s Keelboat Championships. This is an invitational-only regatta August 14-19, 2016 at American Yacht Club in Rye, New York. 12 International and 12 US teams are invited; we are the only team from Northern California. This attracts the best female sailors globally. Our team consists of Ashley Tobin, Melinda Erkelens, my daughter Lindsey Watters, and Maeve Lavelle, Lindsey’s sailing teammate from Trinity College, Dublin Ireland.
Our team’s goal is to both cover our expenses as well as raise funds for The Pierce Program (fondly known as “Merrill’s Kids”). The Pierce Program is a scholarship program through the Richmond Yacht Club Foundation (a 501c(3) organization) that teaches sailing to Richmond youth who might not otherwise have the opportunity to learn how to sail. Created by Merrill Pierce, a teacher at Verde Elementary School in North Richmond, the Pierce Program aims to build community amongst children from different backgrounds. Funds from the Pierce Program allow students to learn how to sail, feel comfortable being in the water, and gain an appreciation and love for our local San Francisco Bay and the ocean.
We will be “Racing For Merrill’s Kids” under the Richmond Yacht Club burgee and with additional support from OCSC Sailing of Berkeley, California. Thank you RYC and OCSC!
We will donate all monies raised beyond our expenses
to the Foundation to help fund any qualified expenses incurred to operate the Pierce Program. Please note that your donation is not tax deductable.
