On August 28, 2016 one of our well known cowboys was out enjoying life, when an unfortunate accident occurred that resulted in him being placed in the ICU with critical life threatening injures, and the loss of his leg.

It was only a matter of moments before news spread that prayers began to be lifted up for champion cowboy, and greatly loved member of the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo family, Quentin Welch, also known as “The Man of Steele,” a bareback rider from Talladega, Alabama.

Within the first week a number of the BPIR cowboys and cowgirls rallied to Quentin's side to let him know how much we cared and that we are with him on this journey for the long haul. While I was not able to visit in person, we spoke by phone and I assured him that we would keep him in prayer and do what ever we could to assist. Quentin was awake, talking, and filling the room with love and laughter as he always does, while professing his love of rodeo and readiness to return to riding. We are thankful and consider his quick recovery to be another miracle and blessing from God.

As President and CEO of the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo and the Bill Pickett Memorial Scholarship Fund my immediate question was, “How can we assist this cowboy with more than words, something that would be impactful on this journey? ” I reflected on the foundation of both organizations, and the mission statements of what they both represent and recognize, and realized that we had to do something…

The answer became very clear after speaking with Quentin’s mother, Ms. Eula Peters. Quentin will need a new prosthetic athletic leg. One that will allow him to be active; to run, jump, and move with agility. Which will enable him to be with his rodeo family, and around the horses and animals that he loves so dearly.

It is anticipated that this type of leg will cost $30,000, which is not covered by insurance.

It is with that goal in mind that the BPIR and BPMSF have decided to sponsor a GO FUND ME account to support this cause. Over the next couple of months, we will make every effort to help Quentin to literally get back on his feet.

I am so excited that as a small African American owned company, we recognize that one of our purposes is to always help others. We care enough to take on this challenge to help Quentin complete his immediate recovery and then start a new journey by showing that you can't keep a good cowboy down. Can't you imagine the opportunities he will have to share his story so it can help someone else?

I will keep everyone informed of Quentin's progress and our fund raising efforts. The ultimate vision I would like to share with everyone is when Quentin walks and returns to his BPIR family once again.
