Queer Japan is a documentary film with a mission to amplify the voices of LGBTQ+ people in Japan
. Last year, thanks to a Creative Artist Exchange fellowship from the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission and a successful Kickstarter campaign, we spent 5 months shooting over 100 interviews in locations across Japan. Now, we need your help to edit that mountain of footage into a 2-hour documentary film, along with web videos, a zine, and a photo book featuring extended interview texts.

Your donation will fund the post-production of Queer Japan, helping us share the stories of these unique, brave LGBTQ+ individuals with viewers around the world. From activists and manga artists to drag queens, dancers, and politicians, the participants in this documentary lead inspiring lives and their stories are vital in a world that frequently ignores them. Your contribution also directly supports the queer community in Japan: we’ll donate 10% of the funds raised to five excellent non-profit organizations featured in the film.

In order to complete Queer Japan in time for 2018 festivals, we’re aiming to raise our post-production budget by July 30th. Please help us spread the word and reach our goal! Having had the pleasure of meeting the incredible participants in this film and capturing their stories, we’re excited to pass those stories on to audiences around the globe. Your support in that process means the world to us.

Dear supporters of Queer Japan,

Happy 2018! Looking back on the past year, we have a lot to celebrate. After capturing 100 interviews over 5 months of shooting, we've been deep in the post-production process, painstakingly sifting through that mountain of footage and turning it into a cohesive feature-length film. Thanks to Work in Progress screenings in New York, San Francisco, and Toronto, we were able to preview small portions of the project with a variety of audiences, leading to invaluable feedback that has helped us shape the edit. We received a boost in funding from our ongoing post-production GoFundMe campaign, and were able to hire a brilliant assistant editor for several months, accelerating the editing process.

As of now, we have over 1 hour of edited footage, and have crossed the half-way point toward the finish line. Our goal is to complete a first cut by this summer and submit Queer Japan to film festivals in the second half of the year. It's an ambitious timeline, but we're optimistic! While post-production has taken longer than anticipated, it's important to us that we deliver the best possible film for you, our audience, as well as the many incredible artists, activists, and everyday LGBTQ+ individuals in Japan who opened up their lives to us in this process. Thank you for your patience as we work to bring this kaleidoscopic vision of queer life to the screen!

For those of you currently awaiting crowdfunding rewards, please know that we intend to ship out your rewards as soon as possible. Thank you for your graciousness and understanding!

Saturday's Queer Japan work in progress preview at TCAF: The Toronto Comic Arts Festival went great! The crowd's response was encouraging, and I was happy to discuss the film with three of my cohorts and collaborators: Gengoroh Tagame, co-writer Anne Ishii, and lead translator Jocelyne Allen.

This was the last preview screening for the foreseeable future. From now on, it's editing the clock around! Thanks to your help, we've managed to raise 10% of our post-production budget already, but we need to get to 50% by the end of June in order to shoot follow-up interviews in Japan, license music, and complete editing by September.
