Basalt High School Peace Garden

The Basalt High School Peace Garden Needs Your Help

I am a junior at Basalt High School (BHS) who has created a garden on the school’s campus to provide a safe and quiet place for its students.  The idea for the garden arose from my and other students’ experiences of being bullied and needing a place on campus where they can feel secure.  Students from the BHS Flower Club  are providing labor to maintain the garden.   Construction of the garden took place in early April, 2016.  The garden replaces a grassy, high water use area with a drought-tolerant space, saving the school district watering costs. It is located adjacent to the BHS library.  This project has given me a voice and has developed my leadership skills.  If you would like more information about my project, please visit the following Aspen Times link for a story written about the garden.

I write to you today to seek your assistance so that we may complete this project. We are oh so close and yet, without you and others like you, this special place on campus will fall short of our mission. Through the generosity of local businesses, charities and from people just like you we have raised all but the final $6,000 of our $40,000 budget. They said we couldn’t do it and we remained steadfast in our determination to see this project through the end.

Our final push to the finish line has yielded a unique opportunity for us. The Roaring Fork Club of Basalt, CO, a world class private Golf and Fly Fishing Club, has offered to match your donation in this campaign, dollar for dollar up to $3,000, so that we may reach our goal of $6,000. Your donation is effectively doubled if you act now.

We would be grateful for any amount you can spare, be it $5 or $500! Won’t you help make this a reality? In light of all that is happening in the National news littered with negative connotations, here you have a group of young people just trying to make a positive impact, on one another and their community. In the event we are so fortunate to exceed our goal, we will deploy the additional funds to further enhance the space and potentially extend our reach to create more awareness within our school and community to our mission: safe places. Thank you for your consideration.
