Imagine a parent – isolated and overwhelmed by family issues – told by a well meaning specialist that her three-year old child “...has symptoms of an educational disability impacting her ability to store and process information resulting in a delay in meeting developmental milestones...” The specialist tries to explain about the support services available to address what may be later diagnosed as a learning or developmental disability.  But the parent doesn’t hear.  Instead, her brain floods with feelings of panic, shame and guilt.  She hears words loosely translated as “mental retardation” or “damaged good.”

Since 2000, Pleasant Valley Neighborhood for Learning has provided parents with valuable information and support to help children grow and develop into healthy, competent and confident children.  With developmental screenings, parents learn about each stage of their child’s development.  They are taught to look for developmental milestones; things most children can do by a certain age, and how they can help their child achieve these milestones.  They are taught to look for signs that may indicate a possible developmental delay. 

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all parents had this information from the moment their baby is born?  This dream could be a reality if Pleasant Valley Neighborhood for Learning could raise the funds to create a new smart phone app that will track developmental milestones in real time.  The app would have the feature of recording each milestone achieved, including photos!  Imagin your baby’s first step, recorded with date, time, notes, and photos on an app that can later be downloaded and turned into a “Baby Book.”  The app would also have a list of signs that may point to a possible developmental delay so that parents can act early and consult their child’s doctor.

Creating an app of this high quality will be costly.  That is why we are asking for donations to make this a reality for every parent.
