Ollie's surgery and rehab fund

Donation protected
Ollie came to us in February 2014 - a sweet, loving, and brave rescue dog that overcame tremendous obstacles to join our family.  When he was rescued, he had been in a parking lot, covered in tar with significant rear leg trauma and a massive infection of his belly and genitals.  The rescue agency, DRNA (Dachshund Rescue of North America) had already helped Ollie through several surgeries to correct his problems.  He was being rehabilitated to learn to walk and run again and he was described as "a love bug" with a lot of energy.  I knew from the moment I saw his photo and read his story on the DRNA  website that he was the little man who would complete our family.

Once we were lucky enough to be approved to adopt Ollie and he came home, we spent the next year getting Ollie everything he could want.  It was our goal to make him as happy as he deserved and help him overcome his past.  He got stronger, braver, and friendlier (something that I didn't think possible) with each passing day.  After months of saving we were even able to buy our new house in early December so that he could have a huge fenced yard to run and play in.

Then on Christmas Day, my father had a massive stroke.  After his time in the ICU and rehabilitation he came to live with us so that we could help him to recover.  Ollie (and his sister Zoey) spent hours snuggling and playing with Dad - adding life to a rehab that was overwhelming.  In that time, Ollie grew into his new role as the motivator.  His story inspired Dad (as it had already inspired us) and Dad lovingly called Ollie his "therapy tech" as Ollie watched our daily rehab sessions.  Ollie's loving personaility and enthusiasm for life were our sunshine....

Two nights ago Ollie got out of our backyard and was hit by a car on the major roadway by our house.  He managed to survive, and with the help of firefighters generous enough to drive him and his Dad, was rushed to the animal ER.   He has been stabilized and his injuries have been fully assessed.  After scan upon scan the surgeon told us just how bad Ollie's injuries are:

Ollie has a small fracture in his neck, several broken ribs, lung contusions, some internal bleeding, a broken knee (just above the plate that he already had from his past injuries that DRNA fixed), and several fractures in his pelvis that will require surgery. He currently cannot move his back legs but he has sensation - so that's a positive and the surgeon gave him a 90% chance of walking again. He's stable and on pain medication/sedation to keep him comfortable until they can do surgery. He has been monitored for two nights now and if he stays stable through the morning, he will have surgery today to repair his knee and pelvis.

My husband and I are more than willing to mortgage our lives to pay for whatever care Ollie needs.  Once he is out of the woods and has his surgery, the road ahead is going to be full of physical therapy, accupunture, massage, and veterinary support.  We have already been told that the low estimate for just the emergency care and surgery is around $12,000.

With all the medical expenses we have had over the past few months due to Dad, there is no "rainy day fund" left and though it's immensely hard for us to admit, we need help to cover Ollie's medical expenses so that we don't sink further into debt.

We know how many people loved and cared for Ollie before he found his way to our family, and we can't thank you enough for all you did to get him here.  Please know that we are only asking for your help again because Ollie is such a special little guy.

Thank you all for your help in advance - even the smallest donation will help.  If money isn't available, prayers and support will be welcome to guide Ollie through.

I promise to keep everyone updated and please know that any money that is raised beyond Ollie's expenses we will donate back into DRNA (Dachshund Rescue of North America) so that other dogs like Ollie can find thier way home.
