Not the S.A.M.E. Goes to VEX Worlds

Donation protected
Team S.A.M.E. 1535Y was formed in the Fall of 2015 and consisted of three girls (6th grade) and one boy (5th grade). The original S.A.M.E. Team members last year included Sophie, Ava, Morgan and Emma, hence the name S.A.M.E.  Mid-Season, Sophie decided to leave the team due to conflict with school. Ava, Morgan and Emma continued on with many competitions in the Nothing But Net Challenge and won the Middle School Excellence Award at the Minnesota State Competition and did participate in the Worlds Championship in April 2016. They had a great experience and placed 49th out of 86 teams in the Opportunity Division with a record of 4 wins, 6 losses.

In the Fall of 2016, due to Fall sports and academic changes, Morgan, a 6th grader from Athlos Academy , became the only returning team member of S.A.M.E. and he decided on a new team name that was more fitting. Not the S.A.M.E. 1535Y was formed under our new organization name, Central Minnesota Robotics. The High School (Apollo) Team, Northway Drivers 1535N also is a part of our new organization as well.

The 2016-2017 VEX Robotics Game Challenge is called Starstruck . Watch the YouTube Video here  to see what it is all about!

Morgan had a rough start to the new season participating as a team of one during the first competition Central Minnesota Robotics hosted at Cathedral High School. Morgan leaned on a good friend, Ethan of a North Junior High Team, Dainty Turtles, a few times when not competing in the same tournaments. Ethan is a great friend who loves robotics also and served as a (fill in) team member in several competitions including Sartell Sabre Robotics and Windom Robotics. Ethan helped Morgan with driving the robot with the dual remotes in the matches and bouncing ideas off each other in how to improve the robot build or programming. Ethan will be joining Morgan in their trek to VEX Worlds in Louisville, Kentucky in mid-April.

Morgan's older brother, Aaron of the Northway Drivers team also helped him in the SCTCC Competition and that was the very first time they worked together and were Tournament Finalists. Not the S.A.M.E. won the Skills Award that day and the Excellence Award with the help and guidance of his older brother. It was nice seeing them working together instead of competing against each other for once!

At the Minnesota State Competition this past weekend, February 3-4, Coach Kevin Kieke of KAHS Cubs B Team was kind enough to loan us two teammates of his middle school team, Carter and Robert. These boys helped Morgan tremendously throughout the two day State Competition and I don't think Morgan would have done as well as he did without them. They made a great team and complimented each other quite well. They had great communication while helping with robot repair (replacing a bad motor during Semi-Finals) and came together as if they had been working alongside each other from the beginning.

Not the S.A.M.E. team ranked 3rd place in the Qualification Matches out of 40 teams with 7 wins 1 loss in the Middle School State Competition on February 3-4. The team was the Skills Award Winner with a score of 26 and also was the receipient of the Middle School Excellence Award. Team Not the S.A.M.E. picked their alliances, the Osseo Bomb Squad (Rank #5) and The Pink Team (Rank #28) to go to the Quarter-Finals. The three team alliance made it to the Finals and won with a tie breaker score of 26 to 25.

Team Not the S.A.M.E. took home the Robot Skills Award, Excellence Award, Tournament Champion Award and has an invite to VEX Worlds Championship in Louisville, Kentucky, April 19-22, 2017.

An invite to the Worlds VEX Competition two years in a row is not easy and we are very proud of the hard work and dedication Morgan has displayed.

We are asking for donations to help pay the team registration fee of $850 to compete in the April 2017 VEX Worlds Middle School Championship. Any additional funds will help ease the costs associated with the transportation and lodging of the team/coaches and may be used toward VEX Robotics parts/products and/or future competition registration fees.

If you would like to help the team in any other way or would prefer to make a donation offline, you may contact us for mailing information.

Morgan, Ethan, Carter and Robert are looking forward to going to the Worlds Championship together this April.

Thank you for supporting this STEM Education!SaveSaveSaveSaveSaveSaveSaveSave
