My Procedure:
A full double mastectomy and chest-contouring.
Date:
September 14th. (It was going to be cancelled and I thought I'd have a lot more time to save and plan, but this date just opened back up and I'm trying to take the opportunity, as these procedures are in high demand and not always available.)
The Help I Need:
$4,000 insurance deductible.
$4,000 for 6 weeks of rent, an Air B&B to heal in for the first couple weeks.
$4,000 for 2 days of aftercare by a registered nurse.
$1,000 for meds, emergency expenses gofundme fees and transportation.
Obviously I I'm hustling on my end and also trying to make up this number, I am not solely relying on one month of crowdfunding.
Any help at all is an honor and greatly appreciated.
I'm transitioning in many ways - some induced by my physical transition - and in the very near past I would have gotten overwhelmed by the idea of having this surgery at this time in my life; Of having to ask friends, family, strangers and loved ones for help (especially money); and of having to deal with all of the paperwork, planning time to heal, letters from psychiatrists, and insurance-business that surrounds this type of procedure.
I am trying to become a better man in all areas of my life. And part of that for me is putting one foot in front of the other and trusting that things will work out even when I can't see the outcome. Even if I don't feel deserving. Even if I'm scared.
My surgeon Dr. Bluebond-Langner at NYU Langone and my doctor, Zil Goldstein at Mt. Sinai are my angels and have teams that have been taking care of me and will continue to.
Chemda, my parents, the Keith and The Girl and Kill Me Now Podcast communities, my acting community, the queer community, the straights, my friends and even people I haven't met, have supported me for the last decade with beautiful love, energy, sacrifice and kindness and I am beyond grateful to every single person even taking the time to read this and share it.
My Story:
I started developing when I was about 9 years old.
I remember the day my mom had to have the conversation with me about wearing a shirt around the house, which confused me at first because my brothers didn't have to.
By the time I was 10 years old I was already beginning my physical transition without even realizing it, binding my chest with two undersized sports-bras and wearing my (much larger than I) father's t-shirts.
Anytime the wind would blow against me, even to this day, I'd instinctively pull the shirt up off of my chest, as not to draw attention to my ever-growing chest fat. Or as some like to call them, "boobs."
Pop and I have shared a closet ever since. Thanks Dad. :)
My Promise:
I promise to continue in my pursuit of becoming a better man, ally, friend, partner, colleague, acquaintance and human and hope that this admittedly vain-feeling endeavor to relax in my skin will bring about more Universal gifts and service that I hope to be a vessel for.
Thank you for support- monetary, energetically and just for taking the time to read and share.
LOVE. ALOHA. Hennessy.
