Building New Hope School - Arusha
Donation protected
We would like to share a story about an amazing man called Juma.
Juma is a father of three children in a little district called Meru in Arusha, Tanzania. In addition three of his own children he houses and feeds nine orphans out of his own pocket. Juma is the director and founder of an orphanage called New Hope which he is utilising as a school also. He sends all of the children that live with him to New Hope, including his own.
In his district, he is called “The Father of Many”.
Unfortunately, due to a new government in Tanzania, there has been a lot of laws changing and greater governance on schooling and education. As a result, Juma has had to send half of his students, including his orphans, to a nearby school so New Hope remains compliant. Sadly, some of these kids at the new school are being beaten by the teachers to the point where they are bruised and scarred. Corporal punishment is legal and commonplace in Tanzanian schools, but this level of ‘discipline' is abhorrent.
Juma’s story has also inspired us - Jess, Garrett, Lucas and Mary to start a major project to register and build a new school here in Arusha.
Juma bought part of a piece of land not long ago which will serve as the site for New Hope school and is in the process of getting this school registered. We have already seen a lawyer to provide advice on the fastest and best way forward, and have inspected the land where the school will be built. We have project planned with Juma, laid all the cards out on the table and identified targets, budgets and goals. We’ve networked and created relationships with stakeholders.
The ball has already begun to roll so please help us in keeping the momentum going!
Thank you to everyone so far who has gotten us to this point.
Big, huge, massive love.
Garrett, Jess, Lucas and Mary
