New Heart (and Kidney) for Mike

$9,337 of $20,000 goal

Raised by 80 people in 26 months
Born in 1986, Mike Hargett was diagnosed with hemophilia and needed brain surgery at two days old (which was likely when he also contracted hepatitis C). He’s had serious chronic and life-threatening medical issues his entire life. He’s dealt with painful joint bleeds, surgeries, hospitalizations, obesity, exorbitant medical bills, and the death of family and friends in the hemophilia community. And then he was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy in 2004, a heart condition that can lead to heart failure and death.

Mike received his perfect new heart at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles on May 9, 2016!

Yet his fight is not over. His failing heart took a toll on his kidneys and he now needs a kidney transplant. He's on dialysis 4 days a week and is looking for a live kidney donor so he can finally get the chance to live his life to the fullest!

In the past two and a half years, Mike has lost 250 pounds, was treated and cleared of the hepatitis C he contracted from a blood transfusion when he was 2 days old, and is the first person in the United States with hemophilia to receive a heart transplant! He is definitely a warrior!

This gofundme page's goal is to raise money for the Hargett/Hall family to help deal with these ongoing expenses by helping with lost wages, rental housing, food, basic living expenses , and other costs associated with his long-term medical care. We anticipate this will be short-term help until Mike and his mother can both go back to work, but in the meantime his family will need to raise $1,000 each month to meet their basic expenses.

People often ask how they can help, yet feel powerless to know how to help Mike and his family. Financial support is the best way to help if you can. And always, always, prayer and positive thoughts are welcomed and do keep Mike and his family going.

LET’S “SCARE UP” SOME DONATIONS TO GET MIKE THROUGH HIS OCT. 31 KIDNEY TRANSPLANT!

As you may already know, the Hargett/Hall family has a $1,000 gap each month between their basic living expenses and earnings. While for the past 6+ months we’ve been able to cover most of this monthly gap through donations from close friends and family, we need a little help from our Facebook friends to get them through October (and likely November and December, too)!

Mike’s mom Lou Anne plans to find a job once he’s self-sufficient after the kidney transplant. In the meantime, we hope you’ll consider contributing to their family through Mike’s GoFundMe page. Thanks for stepping up to help this amazing family!

WE HAVE A KIDNEY DONOR!

After having a number of amazing people come forward to be tested to see if they could be a living kidney donor for Mike, it's been confirmed that Alicia is a great match (so perfect it's almost like they're related!), so she will be his kidney donor. Thank you Alicia! We should find out the surgery date soon, but for now we wanted to share this fabulous news.
Thank you, thank you, thank you Alicia!
Can't wait for my new kidney!

KIDNEY TRANSPLANT POSSIBLE IN 6-8 WEEKS, STARTING DIALYSIS SOON! Mike and his mom saw his kidney doctor yesterday, and LOTS of information came from that appointment. Bottom line is Mike is feeling pretty lousy these days, and the majority of his worsening symptoms (nausea, vomiting, fatigue, no appetite, shortness of breath) are from the declining kidneys – lots of toxins in there. Just for added fun, Mike is still dealing with low platelets and now painful shingles, and of course still has hemophilia and its related issues. He’s sure fighting hard to remain positive, but some days it’s just hard.

The current plan is that Mike will soon start kidney dialysis, which will be twice a week for 2-1/2 hours. The referral for the kidney transplant has been made, and he’ll be able to have the transplant at OHSU. An appointment will be set for next week for them to learn about the live donor process more thoroughly. Mike is “O” blood type. We will definitely share more info when it’s learned.

In the meantime, let’s let Mike and his family know we’ve got their back and are behind them all the way. You can do this!!
