NATE IS IN A FIGHT FOR HIS LIFE!

Here is his story:

In 2014 Nate started a two year health adventure that has brought him from 185lbs to 86lbs and he is wheelchair bound. For all but two weeks of his two year adventure, Kaiser Permanente Hospital had attempted to diagnosis his condition without success. On February 9, 2016 Kaiser finally decided to release Nate to either Stanford Hospital or UCSF MedCenter in San Francisco. A race to see which one had a bed first began. On Thursday, February 11, 2016, UCSF contacted Kaiser to let them know they were ready to receive Nate.

Unfortunately, Nate, suffered several strokes on that Thursday and had to be rushed to their ICU for emergency work to save his life. He was put on a ventilator and put into an induced coma in order to see if they could determine what lasting effects may have occurred from the strokes. This meant that Nate would miss the ride to UCSF. However, a friend of Nate’s contacted his former cancer doctor at UCSF to see if he had any suggestions. This doctor arranged for their ICU department to receive Nate, and Kaiser arranged for a trauma transport to get take him there. Nate arrived at UCSF 12:30AM on Friday February 12, 2016, and his UCSF Care Team begin the work of stabilizing him and trying to save his life.

Nate Update: March 1, 2016
What a difference 18 days has made since Nate arrived at UCSF MedCenter! Within 12-days, his Care Team pinpointed a diagnosis of POEMS Syndrome - a rare blood disease that attacks five different systems in the body. They immediately began a chemo program in order to bring this complex and rare disease into remission. It has been six days since the diagnosis and Nate improves everyday. They expect to move him out of ICU in the next few days. It is a combination of the power of prayer, the support of his family and friends, and a "rock star" Care Team that have saved Nate's life.

Nate has a very long road to recovery. And, he will likely not get all of his mobility back because of how long it took for a diagnosis - almost two years! Not only will his remission treatments continue, but he will have a very rigorous physical therapy program in place each day. And, in the midst this two year health journey Nate has been on disability from his employer for over a year and has very limited income and no financial resources to fall back on.

Throughout this entire two year process, Nate’s mother, Lori, has been by his side. Since February 4, 2016, when Nate had been readmitted to Kaiser Hospital because of complications from his disease, she was there 24/7, sleeping on a small sofa. She has taken a leave of absence from her job after already using up her vacation time. She is also without income from her job, and has depleted her retirement account and savings. A mother’s love has no boundaries. She is also fighting for Nate’s life.

Besides the power of prayer and the skills of his UCSF Care Team, what is needed is financial assistance for the pile of expenses and lost wages that has taken place over the past 24 months. In addition, there will be costs related to the reconstruction of Nate’s mom’s home where he will be living after he is released from UCSF in order to accommodate his wheelchair and rehabilitation needs.

At his point, the minimum financial need is $128,000. This number could be much higher when it is finally determined what portion of the UCSF MedCenter hospital bills will be paid by Kaiser Permanente Hospital because Nate is covered under their insurance.
