I have been the victim of ongoing cyber harassment that has included the public posting of a private and intimate video. My naked body was hurled into the homes, purses and pockets of more than 1,000 of my Facebook friends, including members of my family.
The cyber criminals have attacked my personal and professional pages, forcing me to suspend all social media and pull my advertising. As a budget travel blogger and eBook author, my only source of income has been completely eliminated for fear of further attacks.
Cyber harassment and revenge porn are incredibly difficult to prove and harder to prosecute. Most police departments don’t even have cyber crime divisions so my decision to hire a digital forensics firm to stop the attacks was not made lightly.
In a survey of 3,000 Americans, 47% reported experiencing online harassment or abuse. But that isn’t the number that has me risking further attacks to tell my story. With 21% of cyber harassment victims retreating from all social media permanently, I need your help to resist becoming a part of that incredibly sad and defeating statistic.
I refuse to be silenced and shamed so I used my background as a journalist to create a website and podcast to tell my story. At My Cyber Assault you can see photos, screen shots and supporting documents on everything from the harassment, to the costs associated with stopping it.
The content is graphic, disturbing and embarrassing. And that's why I’m sharing it. The more we expose and prosecute this kind of despicable behavior, the sooner a screen won’t be so easy to hide behind.
With the help of the hired digital forensics team, authorities have served search warrants on Facebook and several internet providers to connect the suspects to the IP Addresses used to create the fake account and send out the private video. But my fight isn’t over. Cyber crimes are not limited to just one jurisdiction and can span several states, making it impossible for most victims to cover their travel expenses to press charges and testify.
