Mr. O's Classroom Library

Students at my school are hard-working and determined in spite of financial and community disadvantages. They recognize their school as a safe place where their opinions and thoughts are nourished and encouraged and often desire for more opportunities to do so. Unfortunately, with funding as it is, they have a limited selection in the library and in their classrooms when it comes to high-interest books.

Which causes another limiter set upon our students - literacy. The vast majority of our students come from homes far below the poverty line and access to quality books is limited to their school libraries or the long drive to a local one. Many of these young people simply never get the opportunity to truly enjoy books. This causes a cascading effect - they never learn to love reading, so they rarely learn about stories or events outside of their own community, so they struggle in learning about the world, so they struggle in finding great and challenging careers.

My goal is to build a rich classroom library for my students (and even my neighbor teacher students) to use to engage with reading. Using bestseller lists and high-interest lists for high school students I've put together a shopping cart of books at ThriftBooks.com that contains over 130 books at roughly $4-5 apiece. It totals out to around $565. However, the reason why I am asking for a little more is in case the prices change between the start and completion of this fundraiser. If I end up with more than the price of the books, I will simply add more books! Every dollar earned in this fundraiser will go directly towards the purchase of books for my students.

I need these funds before the beginning of the school year so that I can set up my classroom library before students arrive. I already spend around $500-1000 of my own money each year on my students and their classroom and I simply don't have the additional funds to add a significant number of books.

Every little bit helps and if you help me with this big upgrade in books, you'll be providing the opportunity for students to enjoy reading now and well into the future! I will even update you with a photo of the completed library to appreciate what you've done for my students!
