My brother Michael Kersis loves nothing more than a nice ride on his bike. Unfortunately on Saturday April 30th, 5 days after buying his new GSXR 600, he was involved in his 2nd accident in a month. This time possibly preventing him from enjoying his #1 love again.
Michael has taken every precaution possible to prevent any accidents. He has take multiple motorcycle defensive driver courses, he has never riden without a helmet even though he has lived in 2 states where they are not required, and he always drives the speed limit. Unfortunately it wasnt him he had to worry about. His first accident about a month ago was in a development where Michael was going to a convienent store after his aunts funeral. At low speeds a 21 year old girl ran a stop sign while texting and driving and clipped my brother. He had minor injuries but nothing more than some road rash and a totaled bike. He was able to walk away and now had the opportunity to buy his dream bike, a 'Jixxer'.
Unfortunately, Saturday April 30th has changed my brothers life forever. He was involved in a 2nd accident. Unfortunately this time he was not able to just walk away. Michael was on his way to work as he does every day when a woman ran a red light and completely altered his future. Mike was going UNDER the speed limit as he crossed a major intersection when the accident occurred. My brother was rushed to the hospital with what first responders thought for sure was fatal injuries. Michael finally woke up 5 days later in the ICU brain trama ward. Today, 10 days later he was able to stand and take a few steps for the first time with 2 physical therapists assistance. Without going into too much detail my brother has an EXTREMELY long road ahead of him involving brain rehab and physical rehab to hopefully eventually get back to a somewhat normal state of being.
There is now doubt whether my brother, who loved nothing more than a ride on his bike, will be able to ever do it again at no fault of his own.
As you can imagine expenses are piling up for all of us. Me and my mother are here to support Michael every step of the way because at the moment he needs 24/7 care. We both left Florida and came here to South Carolina immediately. This also means we are both not working while we support my brother taking shifts at night with him and spending all day with him, helping in any way possible. My brother also won't be able to work for quite some time. Our bills are piling up. We have our normal bills from back home (rent, car payments, insurance) and then expenses of staying in an unfamiliar town. Hotel bills for the one getting rest that night, no kitchen and eating out every meal, bringing Michael whatever he asks for to comfort him, and many other things. Expenses are becoming almost too much to handle.
All we ask is that you spread the word of my brothers story. A huge motorcycle lover who has always practiced defensive driving and may never be able to ride again at no fault of his own. Please continue to pray for his recovery everyday, as everyday becomes a new challenge. Michael had an angel watch over him on April 30th, but now he needs your prayers to help him progress.
Any help to get us through these tough times means the world. My brother brings such joy to the lives of so so many people. Please just help us help bring some joy back to his.
