               Chinese Tongzhi(LGBT) Catholics Tales

I am managing the campaign for Eros in UK since the campaign cannot be set up in China. All donations will be placed in an account in UK which Eros will access when he comes to the UK in 2018. Please give as generously as you can for this seminal piece of work which shines a light on the struggles, hardships and secret joys of LGBTQ Catholics in China for the love of their faith and the treasured loves in their lives.

This is an important book that needs to be made available to the English speaking readers the world over. Eros Shaw, the Editor, currently residing in China is a member of the China Rainbow Witness Fellowship and the China Catholic Rainbow Community and member of the Global Network of Rainbow Catholics(GNRC).

Here is what Eros says about his book.
“This is a collection of true stories told by Chinese LGBTIQ Catholics.
Whilst there may be 50, 000,000 LGBTIQ Catholics world wide, there are an estimated two hundred thousands homosexuals among the12.5 million Catholics in China. These LGBTIQ Chinese Catholics are in the depths of the deprived, living on the outer edges of life. I have met at most one hundred of them. How do they live their lives? They might live in deep closet, or in a straight marriage trembling with fear at being discovered, or even struggling as a religious. Some of them leave the Church to live in solitude.

Most of the storytellers take on assumed names. Baptismal names are often used, as other Chinese LGBTIQ  use nicknames. Traditionally, patron saints are used Catholics, but these LGBTIQ take their baptismal names to hide their secrets, which might be a kind of protection from their patron saints. Why risk presenting yourself to others with their true self? How many of us could dare to face others with their true self?”

Eros struggled to find money from friends and family for the Chinese version of the book. Now he needs to find money for the book to be translated into English and then printed. The initial run of 1000 copies will be in the region of £6000 with another £2000 for a loan Eros took out that now needs to be repaid. So, the total amount that Eros needs to raise is £8000. This will have to be raised by the end of 2017 so that translators can be hired and then for the printing costs to be covered.
In the link below you can see how Eros has struggled to get his book published in China. The importance to share and understand the struggles lgbt Catholcs face in China is so important for us  here in the West, where we take our own everyday freedoms for granted.
