 MARLBOROUGH, MA
On Saturday the 19th of December Staff Sargeant Matthew James Whalen fell ill. He was taken to the hospital with and was diagnosed with a hemorrhage in his brain. He did not recover. On the 21st of December 2015 this hero served again, his organs were donated to two veterans in dire need of transplants. His wife Hannah Whalen was by his side and now has two small children to provide for as well as hospital bills. There is never a good time for this, but this is one of the worst times. Matthew and Hannah both served their country, as STRIKE soldiers (2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division) with multiple deployments while in the army and now they need our help. We cannot bring back Logan, Mattix, and Sadie's father, but we can help his wife and family, especially during this time of year.

Good evening,
I wanted to make another update before signing off to sit down with my family. You have done God's work, you have shown compassion to the reaches that only the best of humanity can achieve. You have helped a family in need, whether you knew them or not. We thank you for helping our friends. Words don't come close to the awe and humility you have inspired with your generosity. Have a very merry Christmas! Thank you friends.

This campaign has been successful beyond imagination. Your generosity and dedication has been instrumental not only in helping this family through a hard time, but in making Matthew's story reach the news so that many more may know about the person he was. Thank you again, we are so close to our goal and maybe we will go beyond! Thank you again and God Bless.

Hannah did not create this page. Her combat family created it on behalf of her, to benefit his children. Matthew ETS'd in 2013. He does not have SGLI/VGLI, or any other life insurance. He was not at a military hospital, however the staff was very moved by Matthew's story and honored him in a way that we cannot thank them enough for. Matthew battled demons, just like many of us. That is not his legacy. If you have something shitty to say about Matt's past, then by all means contact his ex wife. She refused to let Matthew's son say goodbye to his dad, and she would probably love to sit down and talk shit about Matthew and desecrate his name even after his death. Again, if feel like you knowore about military benefits and the way all this is supposed to work, CONTACT ME DIRECTLY!! Leave your negative comments and opinions OFF OF SOCIAL MEDIA. Hannah just lost her husband and the father of their children. Find it in your heart of hearts to muster up a little shre of respect and courtesy for the grieving family. THIS IS THE NICEST I WILL BE ABOUT THIS ISSUE! Thank you all once agaon for your continued support.

The person that set up this account is a personal friend and former coworker of Hannah Whalen. He has already given her sole access to the funds. Neither Matt or Hannah were still in the Army at the time of his passing. They have four children between the two of them. Please refrain from posting hurtful comments as his friends and family are trying to grieve. The account was set up to help ease some of the financial burden off of Hannah and her children in their time of need.

I am confused as to why people need to know if had life insurance, was he in a military hospital, did he have full benefits? None of that matters and those who point out things like that are people with too much time on their hands. This story and fund is for man who risked his life to serve OUR country who made it home safetly to his family after several deployments to then pass on the gift of life in his final moments. This family does not need the negatively or nasty comments from anyone. This family needs prayer, understanding, and some help. Before you make a comment pretend for a moment this is your husband, father, son, brother. Perhaps then you will find kindness in your our heart to he sincere and offer this family with kind words. Thank you again for serving our country and may you rest in peace. GOD BLESS THE USA AND OUR SOLDIERS AND VETERANS

Hannah, we do not known each other. I feel compelled to rell you what a wonderful gift your husband's organ donation truely is. My sister received a heart and kidney 25 years ago, she still has the organs from the original donor. I still have my sister because in a time of great sorrow, a stranger gave us hope. The donor family is unknown to us. I would love to thank them, to have them tell me of their son, we only know he was an 18 year old male who loved karate. If you have the choice to reveal your husbands identy to the recepients, take it. My sister used her second chance to do selfless and generous things for others. Her story is winding down now as the kidney no longer functions and her doctors told us quite frankly that Debbie is a learning curve for them. For see, a donor heart rarely makes it past 15 years, 20 is unheard of and 25 is not seen. With her health is never an issue. She still honors her donor, she donates and supports many causes for those in need because she was given a second go at life. Your husband's story will continue through those he helped this week. Bless your family.

I do not know Hannah or her beloved Staff Sergeant, but I want to thank them both for their service to our Country. Also a thank you to his family for making the decision to donate his organs. Matthew saved lives by doing this just as two strangers years ago saved the lives of two of my sisters by being organ donors. Everyone should sign up to be an organ donor. When I watched the video that Hannah wanted posted to FB, I cried with you all on that long walk. May God bless you all at this hard time.

To the person suggesting because of the organ donation all the medical is covered is simply misinformed. The organ bank which procures the organs take care of the retrieval costs associated with the organ donation not the costs leading up to donation.

Folks, we need to focus on the crux of the matter. We just lost a American Hero, combat Veteran who was honorable by serving our country to the end! Although I didn't have the honor of knowing this hero, he's my Army brother and his wife; my Army sister. Veterans have a unique bond and never leave comrades behind. R.i.P. Hero! SFC (r) Gonzalez.

I don't personally know anyone involved here but as the mother of a 19yo son in the Army currently deployed to Kuwait and a long time employee of a group of kidney specialists this story and video at the hospital really hit me hard. The mom side of me is crying my eyes out with an ache in my heart. The employee side of me has seen first hand how precious the gift of organ donation can be. Thank you, Matthew Whalen, for serving our country and for serving humanity by giving the gift of life to two individuals. You have my utmost respect. My sincerest condolences to all family and friends. Rest well sir. ❤️

My heart is full tonight. In the wake of the tragedy that cost Harlow Danger her husband, he was able to save two other lives, veteran's lives at that. A couple of us former Charlie medics talked and the idea of a GoFundMe was brought up. We knew that Hannah would never ask for help on her own and we wanted to attempt to ease some type of burden off of her as her and their children grieved. We honestly thought a few old coworkers would donate enough to cover a few expenses and that would be the end of it. We didn't expect much because it's the holidays and times are tough these days. Less than 48 hours later, over $50K has been raised and donations keep coming in, mostly from strangers. I know that nothing we do can bring Matt back to Hannah and their children, but my faith in humanity has been restored. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all that have donated or shared their story.
