College Tuition Freshman Year

Hello everyone, my name is Matthew Bedell, and I am here to ask for a very solemn request. I need help covering the tuition for college. The issue that I have isn’t my fault, nor is it the fault of my parents. We’ve been dealt a terrible hand and now we are paying the price for it. Here’s how it all began.
On December 12th, 2009 my father died from a heartattack when I was eleven years old. This started a chain of events that caused us to lose much. We lost a source of income into the household and things became tougher. Each year during the Winter/Fall, something terribly bad would happen. Some were relatively minor, such as the water heater breaking or the car battery not working. Two however we’re so serious, it has put us into a dire financial situation.
The first happened when I was thirteen in the year 2012. My mom worked as a Billing Manager for a publishing company. My mother was very good at her job, she had worked in the company for 19 years and was respected there. In the end she was laid off. When this happened she lost her ability to keep up with her debts. Because she had so much work experience and was a manager, no one would hire her. She got one temp job during her two years of unemployment in the field that she worked in. Since then she’s worked as a Medical Driver for non-emergency situations, such as transporting people to the clinic for dialysis.
The second thing that happened came in 2014 when I was Fifteen years old. I took a look at the mail and I saw that our house was being foreclosed. It had been two years since my mother had been laid off and she took unemployment through those two years, but it was not enough to pay for the upkeep of the house. Before this point, my mother was attempting her best to shield me from all the issues that were happening with our sudden poverty. From that point onward however I knew the full extent of the damage and how bad things had gotten. The debt was so bad that even selling the house would barely put us at even.
We talked about the issues but i was selfish and I didn’t want to leave. I was enjoying High School and all the friends I had made there, I didn’t want to give it up. So we didn’t sell the house at that moment and we continued to live there. We are still living in this house presently and it’s now on the market. If it sells, it will solve many problems but it would not pay for college.
So now that I have told you my story, we’re back to the present day. I am part of the Edison High School Class of 2016 that graduated on June 22nd. I turned Eighteen on June 24th, 2016. I have my whole life ahead of me but I am caged by an economic downturn. In May of this year I was accepted into Ramapo as part of the class of 2020 where I will be studying Political Science. My dream is to get eventually become a member of the house of representatives and begin the long process of fixing this country.
My plans if elected would run in this order of priority. I would first push for an immediate end on deficit spending to get our country out of debt. After fixing the budget, I would see if I could lower taxes to help save American’s money by reducing the amount you’re forced to give. I would then introducing legislation attacking companies such as Apple and Verizon who base much of their markets in the U.S. yet have their corporate Headquarters or produce their products outside of the country to make up for the lost revenue due to tax cuts. I would then create legislation to incentivize U.S. companies to manufacture in the country and to pay their taxes here. Once I have done all of that, I would like to introducing reforms to the election process giving all candidates including independents a fair chance by reducing the money used within elections. Also, if given the chance, I would like to make public colleges tuition free, but if it’s not possible then I wouldn’t do it.
None of this will be possible however, if I don’t go to college because I cannot afford it. We’ve applied for private and government loans but due to my mother’s financial situation, she cannot cosign for me, therefore preventing us from taking them out. This year is going to be the toughest because I have to meet both the tuition and the room and board costs myself. I am going to attempt my best at becoming an RA for the second year because it will help make college more affordable and because I’ve done things in the past that makes me uniquely qualified for the position.
So if you’re willing to help me in my Journey, then I will greatly appreciate it. Anything that you can send will help us in affording college. Thank you for reading, please share to help spread this and I hope you have a great day!
