Hello Friends,

This page is in support of our friend, Matthew Horner.

Matt is a talented ice climber, guide, sculptor, and all-around great person (as anyone who knows him can attest to). I have known and climbed with Matt for 20 years, and he's a wonderful human being. We all know he would do anything to help a friend or someone in trouble.

Doing what he loves.

Matt had an ice climbing accident Feb 8, 2017, at Chapel Pond near Keene Valley.  He fell 60 feet and suffered severe injuries.  He was first taken to Elizabethtown Community Hospital, then transported via helicopter to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, VT.  His injuries include a 2cm brain hemorrhage, a severe concussion, multiple fractures in his face (a La Fort fracture), and soft tissue injuries to his right wrist, left knee, and hip.

Thankfully, in time, Matt should recover from these injuries, and will be able to guide and pursue his artwork again.

However, in the short-term, his doctors have advised Matt to limit his physical activity and mental stimulation. This will allow his body and the injury to his brain to heal.  He also needs have at least one surgery to repair the fractures in his facial bones, and recover from that as well.

While Matt isn’t in love with the idea of a fundraiser, he certainly will not be able to work either as a guide or an artist for an unknown amount of time - and he has monthly bills as we all do.  I have spoken to him and gotten his blessing for this fundraiser to help cover his expenses while he is unable to work (which could be a few months or up to a year).

Every donation will help Matt directly, and "many hands make for easy work".  Even if you can only afford a small donation at this time, it all will add up and is appreciated! Sharing this fundraiser on social media will help Matt as well!

Matt wants to let you all know he is extremely greatful for the outpouring of love and support he has recieved! Please understand that Matt cannot respond to your outreach individually at this time.  Matt's doctors have advised him that it's REALLY important for him to avoid screen time in front of a computer, cell phone, and other sorts of mental stimulation.  He needs to rest his brain so he can recover!

Please accept my personal thanks as well.  Many of Matt's local friends have already stepped up to the plate to help maintain his home while he is away.  We live in an amazing community, and it's breathtaking to see how we all rally to help when one of us is in trouble.

Thank you again, and please share and spread the word!

Hello Everyone,

Just wanted to send out the latest update about Matt.

I’m sitting with Matt now at home and he’s making great progress.

His visit with the ear/nose/throat surgeon went very well. The doctor said despite the many fractures in his face and nose, most of them have very little displacement. In English, the doctor thinks a “wait and see approach” is best, as surgery could make things worse and not improve Matt’s outcome. So for right now, his facial surgery is on hold.

Matt continues to improve every day, he still says his head is foggy and he gets tired easily, but there is progress!

Matt wanted to send a personal message to you all, so I’ve attached it below:

“I would like to thank everyone deeply for the incredible amount of love and support through this uncertain time!

I am home in Keene now after my initial recovery at my parent’s. Feeling much better and improving daily! Happy to say, with time, I should have a full recovery with no permanent damage!

Thank you again, I am so grateful.”

Thank you all so much for the love and support you’ve shown Matt!

If you’re trying to contact him personally, please remember that he’s following his doctor’s advice and he’s not spending a lot of time on email or in front of a computer. I’ve forwarded all the personal messages you’ve sent to Matt, and will continue to do so as more come in.

Update 2

Hello Everyone,

I spoke with Matt this afternoon, once again he wanted me to pass along how thankful he is for all the love and outpouring of support! I think my wife Lori said it best, her comment about this fundraiser was, “my faith in humanity is restored”. I want to personally thank everyone who’s donated to and shared this campaign…it’s amazing what can happen when a community comes together to help someone in need!

Matt says he’s still improving, and the swelling in his face is getting better every day. His main complaints are that he’s still having headaches, is very tired, and feels like he’s “walking around in a fog” all the time.

He had his first follow up appointment with his neurologist today. The doctor told Matt that he is progressing as expected, and that he probably will have headaches and that “foggy” feeling for 2 to 3 months. He’s supposed to continue to limit his mental stimulation and physical activity. The doctor also told him that he shouldn’t plan on returning to even low intensity work for at least three months, and realistically it’s probably going to be 6 months to a year before he’s ready to return to work at his prior intensity.

Matt will visit the ear/nose/throat surgeon tomorrow, and I’m hoping to chat with him again in the next day or two, so I’ll post another update after I do.

Matt continues to be blown away by all the support he’s getting, and he’s super thankful. If you message or call Matt, please understand that he isn’t able to follow up with you right now. He’s still under strict orders to limit his computer/cell screen time and mental stimulation so his brain injury can heal. Until he’s feeling better, he won’t be able to spend much time online or on the phone.

Thank you so much for your support, Matt really appreciates it!

Hello Everyone,

Wow…amazing…we’re just over 24 hours into this, and with your help, we’ve come a long way already!

I spoke to Matt briefly on the phone this afternoon and wanted to pass on some updates for him.

First off, Matt says he is completely humbled and floored by everyone’s generosity and willingness to help…thank you, thank you, thank you! It’s going to be quite a while before Matt can work again, and this fundraiser is a huge help to him.

He’s feeling better every day, and the swelling in his face is coming down, though he is dealing with headaches and some nausea due to his head injury.

His follow up with the neurosurgeon is on Wednesday. It looks like he’ll see a ENT (ear/nose/throat) specialist and have surgery to stabilize the many broken bones in his face in the next week or two. He still has a long road ahead of him to recover from both his head injury and his facial surgery.

Calls and messages of support have been pouring in to him, and Matt is sorry that he hasn’t been able to contact and thank everyone directly. The doctors have given him very strict orders to stay away from screen time (computers/cell phones/TV) and avoid stimulation so his brain can heal from the severe concussion he received.

When I speak to Matt again, I'll post another update for everyone.

Thanks so much for your love and support, Matt really appreciates it!

It's heart-warming to see the climbing community (and non-climbers, too) come together so fast and so generously. I'm not surprised at all!

Hi Bill! Thank you so much for doing this. I don't know Matt well, just spent time at one of his Mountainfest clinics and know a few of his friends...but he seemed to quickly inspire many and that is where it's at. Maybe in a year or two, he can show me around somewhere in the Daks with an ax or a pole! Really hoping and really pulling for good healing and good energy for him. Cheers!
