Madison for Puerto Rico #Maria

Donation protected
Dear UW-Madison Community:

Today we write to you with a heavy heart. As you have undoubtedly seen during the past couple of weeks Puerto Rico has been impacted by two Category 5 hurricanes, Irma and Maria, the devastation of Puerto Rico in the aftermath is unprecedented. The Island's electric grid has failed, telecommunication towers are down, and supplies are running low and all crops were lost. Puerto Ricans are very resilient, but this time optimism is fading quite fast for those on this beautiful U.S. Island.

We feel impotent being far away from our loved ones. Some of us waited six days to hear that our loved ones are safe, others have not been able to communicate yet. Some of our families lost everything or lost their source of income.

Our island needs your help! The money you donate will be used to buy critical supplies and cover shipping expenses.

We are optimistic that Puerto Rico will get through this with our help. Let’s demonstrate to Puerto Rico that Madison cares.

Sincerely,

Patricia Sanchez-Vazquez will be in charge of handling the funds donated to this page. She has been working on this relief effort with a group of graduate students from UW-Madison called "Madison for Puerto Rico". We all have different roles; Patricia is the treasurer of the group.

Patricia is originally from Bayamon PR but is currently a graduate student in UW Madison.

We are raising funds for Puerto Ricans living on the island, not related to us. We want to help as many families in need as we can all throughout the island.

The money raised here will be used to buy articles of the first necessity. Specifically, we are buying, water, water filtration systems, ready-to-eat food, diapers, baby food,  mosquito repellant, first aid kits, pet food, among many other things that people in the island greatly need.

The money will be transferred into Patricia's Personal account and she will be paying for everything mentioned in the paragraph above with the funds from this campaign. Receipts and an inventory of everything bought with these funds will be shared in a later update.

Once we have bought what we can with the funds, we will be sending everything to the island in pallets with multiple towns as their destination. We have trusted contacts on the island that are willing to help us distribute the goods to the families that need it the most in their hometown.  All of our contacts are people on the island that don't need the items that we are sending. They are looking forward to doing their part in helping their fellows in need.

We will post a list of the towns that we will be helping in the next update.
