Thank you for visiting the Myers Point Weather Station GoFundMe page. A group of wind and water enthusiasts have volunteered their time and expertise to install a weather station at Myers Point Park in Lansing, NY on Cayuga Lake. But, we can’t do it alone!
If you spend time on Cayuga Lake, this weather station is for you! Calling all wind enthusiasts, kayakers, standup paddleboarders, canoeists, boaters, kiters, windsurfers, and anglers... please donate to this project today!
Our ultimate goal is to have a weather station that will be functional year round and provide accurate wind speed and direction, precipitation, humidity, barometric pressure, air and water temperature. The weather station will be connected to WeatherFlow or WeatherUnderground and data will be publicly accessible.
There are several levels of equipment ranging from backyard hobby kits to industrial and marine grade instruments. Below are a few of the configurations we have researched. The level of support we receive from the community will dictate which option we can afford.
Option #1 – Approximately $4,500
Gill MetPak base station with WindsonicM anemometer, Raspberry Pii controller, water temp sensor
- expensive
- small amount of coding required to connect to WeatherUnderground
+ ultrasonic (no moving parts)
+ Marine grade stainless steel (built to last)
+ heated for year-round operation
Option #2 – Approximately $2,000
Gill MaxiMet GMX500, Raspberry Pii controller, water temp sensor
- small amount of coding required to connect to WeatherUnderground
- not heated (potentially will be down frequently in colder weather)
+ ultrasonic (no moving parts)
+ industrial grade (built to last)
Option #3 – Approximately $750
Davis Instruments WeatherBridge
- Consumer quality
- moving parts = fragile
- unlikely to last very long at Myers Point
+ low cost
+ plug and play
The town of Lansing Recreation department, which manages Myers Park has approved the installation of a pole at an ideal location near the lighthouse and offered the use of their Internet connection. Our strong preference is to go with option #1, but if we are unable to raise that amount by the beginning of June, we will go with option #2. We are already funded beyond option #3 but are including it for comparison purposes.
