Luke Shimer Recovery
He was rushed to Flager Hospital in St Augustine where he remains in ICU in critical condition. We are surrounded by family members and friends and coworkers and all prayers are very much appreciated.
Luke served in the Army for 6 years and was deployed twice, 9 months in Afghanistan and 4 months in Kuwait. He now is in the National Guard and is also a Special Ed St Johns County School teacher.
We know that there will be tough times ahead and it is quite likely there will be a tremendous financial burden in front of us. In addition to your thoughts and prayers I would like to respectfully ask for some monetary support to help us through this. I will update this page as often as I can as we have been here in the hospital since Tuesday 17th and we are not leaving until Luke is!
*Repeating words he hears on the TV, his favorite word now is NO. He uses it A LOT. It all started when he heard it on TV and repeated it.
*He is doing really well trying to answer you when you talk to him. Most of the time it is gibberish, but when you ask him a question or just talk to him in general, he responds quickly and looks at you like he is proud that he is answering you. I just know he's going to start talking soon.
*He is getting to EAT! If you know Luke well, you know how happy this makes him. He is still getting all of his nutrition through his G Tube, however, he is allowed pleasure foods now. We have been feeding him Mango and other blended fruits and veggies, some popsicles, and ice cream. His sister was here the 2nd week we were home and he swallowed instantly 8/10 times! This was a huge milestone for him, and he has done really well every time since that day! He also lets you know if he wants more or not. If you tell him to say more if he wants more, he says more. If he doesn't want more he will say No or just look away. He is communicating very well during feed times.
*He is moving his legs and arms more. He re-positions his arms when they are uncomfortable, and when you ask him to move his legs he has done so a few times and tries so hard every time.
*He is doing extremely well tracking people and voices. He turns his head so much more now, and is doing really well holding it up. Mom has been working with him to shake his head yes and no, he has done so a few times and is working really hard to get more consistent with it!
*My FAVORITE thing Luke has started doing is giving me kisses more often. I will tell him to pucker his lips and he will. One day, I asked him to give me a kiss and he did and I said thank you and he said "more" and puckered his lips again. That melted my heart so much and it just shows that he understands so much and is working so hard to get his brain back in shape!
I am so proud of all that Luke is accomplishing. He had an upper respiratory infection last week, we both did, and he bounced back quickly. In fact, Luke was feeling better long before I was! We are still waiting for a few pieces of equipment from the VA, but waiting for our Van is the worst. We really would like to be able to go out and go to church and see our friends and family. So, on top of your continued healing prayers, please pray that the VA moves quicker with our van and that they choose the company that we have been working on. Thank you so much for all of your love and support. Please continue to share Luke's journey with your friends and family. We still have so far to go!
Luke went through Northwestern Lehigh with our daughter, Stevie. I have been closely following these updates and continue to lift him and his family in prayer. I truly believe he will be healed and he will have an incredible testimony of God's amazing healing power and grace!!!! Keep fighting Luke!!! The heavens are being flooded with prayer!!!!!
God is so wonderful! A special thanks to each of you for your thoughts and Prayers. Please continue to keep Luke and his family in your prayers as we all start a busy new week. Prayer is so Powerful and is definitely being felt and miracles are being seen. Amen!
I had the honor of serving your family at the embassy suites in Tampa tonight. Your story truly touched my heart, Luke has been in my thoughts and prayers tonight. May God give you and your family comfort and strength.
Serious tear jerker update!!! Praise God that Luke is continuing to make progress!!! God is great!!!! #shineagainshimer
The update on Scout visiting Luke literally brought tears to my eyes. I can't imagine not being able to see a fur baby for almost 4 months!!! I continue to keep Luke in my prayers!!! #shineagainshimer
WE continue to read your updates and lift you guys up in prayer. I can't even begin to imagine the journey you are on, but the Lord knows your steps and has a plan and purpose. Praying you continue to trust him as he leads you day by day.
Praying for you all.
This is awesome news!!!! Thanks for doing such a great job keeping all of us in the loop!
Omg this latest update left tears in my eyes. Glory be to God!!!! "If God is for me who can be against me?" God is clearly working his miracles. With so much negativity in the world seeing Luke's progress brings joy to my heart. It's a shame that TriCare and the government have to give Vets so many problems in their healthcare after all they have done for us and our freedoms. I'll continue to pray for Luke, you, and your family.
Greater is He who is in Luke (and you) than he who is in the world!!! Continuing to lift all in prayer! We serve a mighty God who hears the call of His people!
Don't walk, RUN to the Shepard Center!!! They do amazing work and are the premier brain injury center in the south if not the country. My best friend's husband spent 6 months after a bicycle accident. They are also very supportive of family and understand that each case is unique. They will listen to YOU as the person who understands your husband and will team with you to help build a recovery/improvement plan. You have the right attitude as shown by your willingness to stand up to the "authorities" who may not share your faith. Continue your fight but make sure you reach out for support for yourself, too.
Still praying for Luke and the entire family. Keep fighting Luke.
I appreciate your posts. Thank you for diligently keeping everyone posted. You and Luke are always on my mind. I will be praying for the administrator's visit on Monday.....praying for you and Luke's family as you spend time at his side. Praying for wisdom and discernment for the doctors as they continue to care for Luke. Praying for the medical staff taking care of his needs - may they be filled with care and compassion. I am lifting Luke in prayer.....praying for complete healing and restoration. Praying that one day Luke will have an incredible testimony of God's amazing grace and mercy!
God is doing miracles with Luke and the family !!!! Rejoice ♡
Thanks for your updates, Kari--I look for them each day. I am sure things are crazy busy for you and Luke at the rehab facility, but that's the way he is going to get better! David and I are pulling for Luke and you and all who love him and are praying daily for you. I was wondering, could the local news stations do a follow-up on Luke's story? Viewers like human-interest stories, and especially follow-up reports. I'd write to them myself, but we were in St. Augustine on vacation when we saw the story on TV (we are from AL) and don't know the TV stations in the area. If you can tell me the stations to write, I would be glad to contact them. Luke continues to need everyone's support, and the public needs to know this! All the best to you and Luke---Margaret
