Luke Shimer Recovery

$21,226 of $35,000 goal

Raised by 344 people in 34 months
My husband Luke Shimer (29 years old) was struck by lightning on the deck of our house in St Augustine, Florida on Tuesday (May 17th) around 6.15pm. His heart stopped and my father in law and my 10 year old brother found him unresponsive a couple of minutes after it happened. They called 911 and the operator talked him through chest compression CPR for 10 minutes until the first responders arrived.

He was rushed to Flager Hospital in St Augustine where he remains in ICU in critical condition. We are surrounded by family members and friends and coworkers and all prayers are very much appreciated.

Luke served in the Army for 6 years and was deployed twice, 9 months in Afghanistan and 4 months in Kuwait. He now is in the National Guard and is also a Special Ed St Johns County School teacher.

We know that there will be tough times ahead and it is quite likely there will be a tremendous financial burden in front of us. In addition to your thoughts and prayers I would like to respectfully ask for some monetary support to help us through this. I will update this page as often as I can as we have been here in the hospital since Tuesday 17th and we are not leaving until Luke is!

Hello! We are back in the hospital due to a wound over Luke's baclofen pump. His pump is now exposed, so they are going to have to do surgery to move his pump. The word on the street (aka the nurses station) is that the doctors will move the pump to a better location UNLESS there is infection present in his spinal fluid. If you would like to continue to follow his updates, the Luke Shimer Updates group on Facebook is still active and I will keep updating on there! Love you all!

Hello friends and family! I'm sorry it has been so long since my last update! On top of being extremely busy with our guy, I have not had a cord to the laptop in order to post an update. Unfortunately, this site doesn't allow me to type the updates from my phone, it always kicks me out when I try. Anyway, let's talk about Luke! We have been home for a month now, and we are so happy to be here! Luke spends a lot of days out on the deck looking at the water, and will tell you NO if you ask him if he wants to go inside. Some new things he has started doing are:
*Repeating words he hears on the TV, his favorite word now is NO. He uses it A LOT. It all started when he heard it on TV and repeated it.
*He is doing really well trying to answer you when you talk to him. Most of the time it is gibberish, but when you ask him a question or just talk to him in general, he responds quickly and looks at you like he is proud that he is answering you. I just know he's going to start talking soon.
*He is getting to EAT! If you know Luke well, you know how happy this makes him. He is still getting all of his nutrition through his G Tube, however, he is allowed pleasure foods now. We have been feeding him Mango and other blended fruits and veggies, some popsicles, and ice cream. His sister was here the 2nd week we were home and he swallowed instantly 8/10 times! This was a huge milestone for him, and he has done really well every time since that day! He also lets you know if he wants more or not. If you tell him to say more if he wants more, he says more. If he doesn't want more he will say No or just look away. He is communicating very well during feed times.
*He is moving his legs and arms more. He re-positions his arms when they are uncomfortable, and when you ask him to move his legs he has done so a few times and tries so hard every time.
*He is doing extremely well tracking people and voices. He turns his head so much more now, and is doing really well holding it up. Mom has been working with him to shake his head yes and no, he has done so a few times and is working really hard to get more consistent with it!
*My FAVORITE thing Luke has started doing is giving me kisses more often. I will tell him to pucker his lips and he will. One day, I asked him to give me a kiss and he did and I said thank you and he said "more" and puckered his lips again. That melted my heart so much and it just shows that he understands so much and is working so hard to get his brain back in shape!

I am so proud of all that Luke is accomplishing. He had an upper respiratory infection last week, we both did, and he bounced back quickly. In fact, Luke was feeling better long before I was! We are still waiting for a few pieces of equipment from the VA, but waiting for our Van is the worst. We really would like to be able to go out and go to church and see our friends and family. So, on top of your continued healing prayers, please pray that the VA moves quicker with our van and that they choose the company that we have been working on. Thank you so much for all of your love and support. Please continue to share Luke's journey with your friends and family. We still have so far to go!

I know we switched to the other website, but I wanted to make sure all of Luke's followers see this update. Hello friends and family! As most of you know, we are scheduled to go home a week from today! I am so excited, I can hardly contain myself. Luke has been doing well mostly, he started his day yesterday a little off, but then had a great rest of his day. I asked him if I was going to get to see his smile, and he looked at me and smiled. That, my friends, is what we call cognitive function. We do not know just how much Luke is understanding, but he is understanding some things. Something the doctors in ICU and LTAC never thought he would have! So, we are going home, and that might be confusing to some of you. Why are we going home from the hospital, when Luke still has more recovery to make? I won't lie, in August, the Shepherd Center was getting ready to release Luke and I hadn't fully decided on the VA and the thought of going home scared me senseless. How could they send him home? Did they think this was as good as he is going to get and they might as well send him home? I was fearful that going home meant accepting defeat, and that they were giving up on him. They assured me that it was not the case, and that so many people recover faster at home than in a hospital. I thought they were just trying to make me feel better. Fast forward to right before Christmas, I was begging them to keep Luke here longer, I wasn't ready to care for him at home yet. So they extended his date. Then we went home for Christmas, and Luke was so happy. He smiled more, tried to talk more, moved his head around more. We could snuggle, and see our dog. I was able to sleep better, even getting up every 2 hours, because Luke was right there and I could look at him for peace of mind at any time I wanted! That's when I realized that everyone telling me that going home would be good for Luke was right! Leaving the hospital is not the end of Luke's recovery, it is the end of a chapter in Luke's recovery! Luke still has a big story to tell, and I could not be more excited to continue the writing of that story in our little town of Saint Augustine. Luke will still have follow up TBI care, and he will continue to receive therapies at home and outpatient. I am looking forward to all that this journey has in store, because I know that Luke and I will have an amazing testimony in the long run. Please pray for our home going journey to be a safe and smooth one. Please continue to pray for Luke's recovery, and for all of the medical staff that ever has the privilege to care for Luke. We love you all, and thank you so much for all of the support these last 8 months. Here's to a new chapter, and a better one!

Sending prayers for Luke and his family. Went to High School with him. He always brought a smile to my face, especially with his shenanigans during theater productions (such as his 'frow in "Fame"). Sending prayers your way!

Omg this latest update left tears in my eyes. Glory be to God!!!! "If God is for me who can be against me?" God is clearly working his miracles. With so much negativity in the world seeing Luke's progress brings joy to my heart. It's a shame that TriCare and the government have to give Vets so many problems in their healthcare after all they have done for us and our freedoms. I'll continue to pray for Luke, you, and your family.

Don't walk, RUN to the Shepard Center!!! They do amazing work and are the premier brain injury center in the south if not the country. My best friend's husband spent 6 months after a bicycle accident. They are also very supportive of family and understand that each case is unique. They will listen to YOU as the person who understands your husband and will team with you to help build a recovery/improvement plan. You have the right attitude as shown by your willingness to stand up to the "authorities" who may not share your faith. Continue your fight but make sure you reach out for support for yourself, too.

Thanks for your updates, Kari--I look for them each day. I am sure things are crazy busy for you and Luke at the rehab facility, but that's the way he is going to get better! David and I are pulling for Luke and you and all who love him and are praying daily for you. I was wondering, could the local news stations do a follow-up on Luke's story? Viewers like human-interest stories, and especially follow-up reports. I'd write to them myself, but we were in St. Augustine on vacation when we saw the story on TV (we are from AL) and don't know the TV stations in the area. If you can tell me the stations to write, I would be glad to contact them. Luke continues to need everyone's support, and the public needs to know this! All the best to you and Luke---Margaret
